Barry Bonds has termed his father the man behind his career. He appreciated him for being strict, which helped Barry find success. But he also showed the difference of opinion he shared with his father. It led him to ignore the name when called out in the public.

On page 83 of the book, Jeff Pearlman describes an incident that showed Barry’s anger upon hearing his father’s name. The author described the backstory and wrote, ” During one-on-one interviews with Bonds, reporters would inevitably say, So Bobby .. and watch Barry stand up and leave. “Usually it takes time for guys to become wary of the media, but Barry developed that immediately.” The same transpired during the 1987 season.

The cause behind it was the Pirates’ media relations director and a phone interview with a baseball writer for the Los Angeles Times. It was a great opportunity, but Barry was not happy about a question related to his father and showed his displeasure the next morning.

Jeff wrote, “Barry entered the clubhouse and walked up to Lachimia. I never called that guy!” he yelled loud enough for everyone to hear. So f*ck it!” The incident was eye-raising. But in contrast, Bonds showed his love for his father.
