In the sports world, managers act as the lifeline of a team, connecting everything that pertains to the game both on and off the field. And as baseball great Jackie Robinson had once said, “The game had done so much for me, and I had done so much for it”. This wise saying seems to hold true for the Toronto Blue Jays’ manager, John Schneider, who not only goes above and beyond for his team on the field but also for the people off of it.
While recently enjoying lunch with his wife, Jess, Schneider’s quick thinking and heroic actions came into play. A woman sitting nearby began to choke, and the Blue Jays manager swooped in to save the day.

Amidst a peaceful day at the Clear Sky Draught House in Dunedin, fate had plans for the Blue Jays manager and put him in the right place at the right time. A woman who was dining nearby found herself in a predicament. She was choking on a shrimp. Schneider, upon noticing this, quickly sprang into action, performing a life-saving Heimlich maneuver on the lady.

Though his heroic action did not grant him a cape to billow after him, they did earn him the woman’s appreciation. The two did not make a big deal out of it, however, and the lady went back to her meal while the manager returned to his.
Humble as ever, according to mlb.com, Scheider said, “It’s not like you’re looking for a pat on the back,” He continued, “Again, I wasn’t looking for a big compliment. I think I was a little bit more rattled than she was.” Despite the lack of fanfare, Schneider did receive a great reward – a free beer. Win-win for everyone, right?
Where did he learn the life-saving Heimlich maneuver?
When questioned about his ability to perform the Heimlich maneuver, Schneider recalled, “I learned it in about sixth grade and hadn’t thought about it since.” His heroic action is causing baseball fans to fill Twitter with appreciation and love.
