Fans Rally in Grief Following Tragic Armed Attack at Boston Red Sox Academy

Although the Boston Red Sox are dominating the New York Yankees in MLB, things are not looking good in the Dominican Republican Academy. Notably, MLB sees a lot of talent coming in from the Caribbean country and many of them have been on the Red Sox roster. Hall of Famer David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, and current player Rafael Devers, to name a few.

Dominicana has increased its efforts to nurture talent in recent years, for which they have established dedicated baseball schools. But if reports are true, their Red Sox training facility is facing some trouble for the second time in two years.

Sports equipment makes for a luring target for robbers. In a world where attention to security is on the rise, thieves look for easier prey to pounce upon. Local and public facilities are the ones that usually become their targets, as is evident with the Red Sox building.

Hector Gomez reported the incident on Twitter, where he detailed what was stolen. “This early morning between 2AM and 4AM a group of armed men entered the Red Sox academy in the Dominican Republic and stole equipment (Gloves, bats, balls, etc),” he wrote. Sadly, this is an ongoing issue that has affected other clubhouses too. They include the Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, and Texas Rangers.

For the Red Sox alone, this is the second incident in two years, as an official confirmed. They also gave some other disheartening news – sports equipment wasn’t the only thing stolen. Eddie Romero, the team’s executive vice president and assistant GM, told ESPN Deportes?that the looters also stole ?material from the administrative offices.? The situation calls for heightened security measures to avoid such incidents in the future.

A call to action for ‘protection from authorities’

Red Sox manager Alex Cora retweeted Gomez’s post with angry emojis, indicating exactly how he felt about the situation. It’s not only a disappointing turn of events, but has caused immeasurable property loss. While reports said no person was present at the time, increased security is a must.

ESPN?s Enrique Rojas feels the same, as he wrote in Spanish, “Thieves looted a @Red Sox academy. With the investment that MLB clubs make in the DR, the minimum they should receive is adequate protection from authorities.?

Romero also made a public plea to the authorities to lend them help to secure the facility. Teams put a lot of effort and money into developing players in the DR, signing them later on. The least they deserve, as Romero pointed out, is peace of mind for the players there.
