Petco Park was meant to be a night of reconciliation. Reeling from a two-game scoreless run, the San Diego Padres were keen to spark their game and provide their supporters something to celebrate. Did that happen? As the innings went on, the stadium’s vibe changed from hopeful expectation to obvious anger. The opposite happened! What contributed? The silly errors from their ace player.

The Padres lost 4-1, their third straight defeat. Over six innings, Ryan Pepiot‘s excellent effort allowed only three hits and one run. He neatly wiped out four of the five baserunners he permitted, walked two, and struck out three. Before Tyler Wade‘s sixth-inning triple and Fernando Tatis Jr.‘s RBI single halted the drought, Pepiot’s performance pushed the Padres’ scoreless streak to 30 innings. This most recent setback was not only another loss. It was marked by a moment, a mistake in the third inning with the score already against them, that sparked a torrent of criticism aimed directly at one of their highest-paid players.

Among the team’s challenges, one player’s performance stood out—not for heroics but for expensive mistakes. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts made a fielding mistake in the third inning that let Junior Caminero get on base. Contributing to the Rays’ early advantage, Caminero then stole second and scored on Christopher Morel‘s double. Bogaerts’ third blunder of the season could not have arrived at a worse moment. Already let down by the team’s offensive problems, fans directed their anger at the $280 million player, doubting his place in the lineup.

Soon after, Jim Russell posted a video of the mix-up on X account, “It has to be all mental with Xander at this point…woof.” The moment the video was up, the fans weren’t going to be easy on him.

It’s not the first time he has outplayed. Remember the Friday night’s disappointing 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays? The Padres have struggled at the plate, and shortstop Xander Bogaerts is not avoiding the team’s unpleasant reality. Bogaerts spoke frankly about the Padres’ offensive slump, “We know the situation that we’re in. We know we have guys out, guys that are key pieces to our team. Opportunity for other guys to step up. That’s what I always say. I think guys have been doing a good job.”

Emphasizing the defensive problems that have beset their high-profile infielder this season, this one game increased the mounting anxiety among the Padres supporters.

The boiling point for fans

Firstly, not playing up to the mark and then a fielding error. It’s like sprinkling salt on the fans’ wounds. “Add a prospect if AJ needs to, but it’s time to let him go.” This feeling indicates increasing frustration among the fan base. Though supporters are now pushing him to take severe action against Bogaerts, A.J. Preller, president of baseball operations for the Padres, is known for his bold roster moves.

Another request, “Dude needs a big sit on the bench for a bit.” It implies a temporary solution, a means to reset the player, perhaps letting him improve his game free from the strain of live competition, or maybe even conveying a message that performance counts. Will the Padres consider this?

Not only did Bogaerts underperform, but the whole team did too. Overall, a team game! “This team is dying.” Disappointing defeats have followed the Padres’ offensive drought and defensive mistakes. Though his high-profile mistakes have come to represent more general problems affecting the roster, the team’s difficulties cannot be ascribed only to Bogaerts.

Is a $280 million contract worth it? “I’m done with this has been! Eat his Contract, and get him the H—- outta here!!!” This intense reaction reflects the emotional price of seeing a high-profile player fail. The Padres’ 11-year, $280 million deal with Bogaerts was a major investment that showed their dedication to creating a championship-calibre club.

Finding an alternative? Sounds good, “Let Iglesias play SS at this point.” Iglesias, who is well known for his defensive skills, might offer the consistency the squad really craves. However, his offensive skills might not be there yet. But at present, the focus appears to be on strengthening the defence to avoid more expensive errors. Is he really a good prospect?

The Padres face a crucial moment. A large financial commitment to Xander Bogaerts and a restless crowd force the team’s management to make uncomfortable decisions. Action is needed to bench the veteran shortstop, trade him, or modify the lineup. To return to the playoffs, the Padres must link their investments with on-field performance.
