The debate against baseball umpires rages on. Games don’t always have a precise win-or-lose moment and sometimes require close observation of a play. That is where umpires come in, but unfortunately, they’re not infallible. While their experience makes them qualified, MLB fans have lately started to question umpire decisions more and more. Luckily for them, it’s the 21st century, and advanced technology is available. But while they await robo umps, some fans feel the game is suffering.
No one is untouched by fans ‘ wrath, from the majors to the minors and even Little League. A Little League has even employed a clever tactic to reduce the animosity against umpires. But the hostility continues, with the latest incident in a minor league.

Major League Baseball has brought in some new rules this year. While the effort to shorten games has undoubtedly paid off, they have also increased the margin of error. As such, the umpire ruling becomes the final decision, leaving many fans unhappy. While this is understandable, bizarre verdicts also keep happening in the minor leagues. Hector Gomez, an MLB insider, recently posted a clip to Twitter that shows a strange play.

Although not specified with teams, it’s a minor league game where a batter stands ready to hit. The pitcher gets into position and just when it seems like he will throw a fastball, he seems to lose steam almost halfway into the action. Just as the pitcher raises his arm, he throws the ball in a half-hearted manner, not aimed towards the batter’s position.

The ball lands significantly away from the plate and the catcher walks to the side to pick it up. But since the batter swung his bat anyway, the umpire ruled him out. While in most situations it would not be considered a proper pitch, the host announces in surprise that the batter is out. Just like that, the inning gets over and the batter walks away dejectedly.
A call for robot umpires at MLB games
Earlier this year, ESPN announced that robo umps would come into play at Triple-A games. The Automatic Balls and Strikes system, or ABS, will be employed at all 30 Triple-A ballparks from 2023. While the system has been used at different minor league levels since 2019, it’s the first time ABS is used at a level for all games.

There are no current plans to introduce the system to MLB just yet. Triple-A will provide some insight into how it can be incorporated into the big leagues. Fans will undoubtedly be happy if that happens!
