The game of baseball has its heroes, the ones that make records, the ones that pitch too fast or hit too hard. Some might jump and take an exceptional catch or create a memorable play. We love the heroes of our game that dominate screen time and social media at once. Now and then, fans come across players who don’t get as much attention but carry with them stories and contributions that are worth mentioning. One name in this category is Jose Leclerc.
Leclerc might not be as well known as many others but has shown class as of late. His rise from an injury that could have easily ended his career to an impressive performance in 2023 is a testament to this fact. Being part of the 2023 World Series champion Texas Rangers squad with the likes of Corey Seager and Adolis Garcia may be overwhelming. But Leclerc has shown that despite lacking that stardom, his contributions are certainly on par.

Jose Leclerec is a 29-year-old Dominican pitcher who is contracted with the Texas Rangers. While being initially signed in 2010, he made his way from the minor leagues and in 2016, made his MLB debut for the Lone Stars.
Throughout the 2023 postseason, Leclerc had an amazing track record and was a pivotal part of the Texas Rangers dream run. This year, with an impressive 67 strikeouts and a remarkable 2.68 ERA, Jose has been all that was expected of him. Especially interesting considering not very long ago, it wasn?t even certain if he could return.
Comeback From Career-Threatening Injury to a Strong 2023 World Series Campaign
The Rangers extended Leclerc on a $14.75 million, 4-year deal following an impressive 2018 campaign. At that time, it was viewed as a successful contract for the team but turned out not to be so. While the 2019 season for Leclerc started pretty well, it was April 9, 2019, in Phoenix against the Diamondbacks, when Leclerc’s MLB career was blown to bits, again. In a horrid game and the dreadful month that followed, his ERA stood at a staggering 8.44 for April. And as expected, Leclerc lost his position as the Rangers’ closer.

In 2020, Leclerc was barely a participant, pitching in just two games. In a continued lean patch, next year in 2021, the Dominican went through a shoulder injury and, the very next year, an elbow injury during spring training. This led to him undergoing Tommy John surgery, and missing the entirety of that season.
Under the Shadow of Corey Seager and Adolis Garcia, Jose Leclerc Is Going Unnoticed
Being a part of a star-studded outfit like the 2023 Rangers, it is not always easy for a relatively lesser-known player to make an impact. He may not be as celebrated as some of his more famous teammates like Corey Seager and Adilis Garcia but he has made his presence felt. After barely participating in the last few seasons, Leclerc has come back strong.
The fact that the pitcher has become a reliable option for the Texas Rangers shows his hard work. It was the same Jose Leclerc, who in 2016 was sent back to the minor leagues but has continued to sharpen his skills. His actions show what it means to work without any excuse.

During a post-match interview, he said, ?You know, I what mean, I’ve always tried to work, try to work hard, no matter how it is. I know in the beginning, it was not that good, but I never stopped working, never stopped doing my stuff down there. And I think that’s helped me a lot. It feels so good right now. Feel all my pace is there. So I just try to do my best every time”.
What Makes It Special?
The story of Leclerc’s life is mostly about baseball. But in the rare instances when it’s not about the sport, it’s about his family. He grew up in the Dominican Republic, a repository of amazing baseball talent, but went through hard times as a child. Pico, as he’s affectionately called, lived a life where going without food or shoes was normal, but he held his family close.
His mother, Fiordaliza, gave up a lot to help the young Jose pursue his love for the game. It was her sacrifices that molded Jose into the man he turned out to be. After signing with the Texas Rangers, one of the first things he did was buy his mother a new house, displaying the gratitude he holds for her and his family.
According to MLB.com, when being asked about his family, Jose responded, “My whole life, my?family is everything,” Leclerc said. “It was not easy where we were from and who we are. From nothing to get here, was incredible. But everything I do ? I do it for my family.”
