Speaking at the podcast, ‘A-Rod’ looked back at a few past decisions made alongside then fianceé, Jennifer Lopez. One of those was to acquire ownership of the New York Mets.

The dream that never turned into reality

A New York Mets team owned by Alex ‘A-Rod’ Rodriguez jointly with his former flame now seems to remain a vision of mere fantasy. The reason being the high-profile pair losing, the bid to Steve Cohen. Speaking at the podcast on Tuesday, ‘A-Rod’ revealed his list of the coaching staff had he owned the team.

Rodriguez talked about holding a special place in his heart for the Mets, as he grew up being a New York Mets fan.

“I’m glad I did it. I think we were in the running. I think we were second winners”, Rodriguez quoted while speaking of the bid.

“Look, I think it would have worked well. But you know, everything happens for a reason, and the Mets are in a great place. So are the Yankees. We may have a subway series rematch here from 2000”, added Rodriguez regarding the bidding results.

The would-have-been coaches for Alex ‘A-Rod’ Rodriguez’s New York Mets

“It’s good to know that we had a lot of similar thoughts in thinking about analytics and leadership”, Rodriguez said about Steve Cohen’s team model, which was in synchronization with Rodriguez’s own.

A-Rod pointed out how he too, would have opted for the same coaching personnel. Buck Showalter and Al Leiter would have been in A-Rod’s management staff for the Mets. While David Cone would have been appointed as the pitching coach.

However, the inclusion of Cone would have meant the replacement of Jeremy Hefner, the present Mets pitching coach. Hefner, a former Mets player, has been largely instrumental in the team’s success. Rodriguez also mentioned trying to have Keith Hernandez brought into the coaching fold. Hernandez has long remained a favorite of A-Rod. No wonder A-Rod fancied seeing Hernandez a part of the team’s think tank.
