The Los Angeles Dodgers are making quite a splash, even if it’s not on the gem of the season, Juan Soto. Just last week, they signed Blake Snell, one of the best left-handed pitchers in the whole league. It wasn’t a pocket pinch, but a whopping $182 million deal over five years—one of the biggest spends in the off-season so far. This move is huge for the LA Dodgers because it only strengthens their lineup more.

Shohei Ohtani, Max Muncy, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman are already top-tier players they have. Now, with Snell, they seem unstoppable—a dream team. But while Dodger fans are thrilled, the same cannot be said about the others. Some are just irritated that the Dodgers are building an all-star player league. They want a salary cap to address the lack of parity in baseball. But while Snell’s arrival isn’t sitting well with the opposition, Max Muncy is just loving it!

Max Muncy, the Dodger slugger, isn’t here to comfort the rival fans. So while they are sad about Snell signing with the Dodgers with a jaw-dropping deal, Muncy is thrilled. On Tuesday’s episode of Foul Territory, he shared, “Everyone else can cry; I’m happy. I got a second World Series ring. I’d like to get maybe a third or fourth,” mentioning that as long as they keep winning and bringing on those players who give them a better shot at winning, he is happy.

Well, one cannot argue with that logic. Winning sure does cure-all, and for Muncy, having that championship mindset is all that matters. Max Muncy clarified that every team can spend big; it’s just that the teams have to be willing. “Every team makes money; it’s just a matter of which team is willing to reinvest in the ball club,” says Max Muncy.

However, what is irking the fans is not the big spending by the Dodgers, but how they are spending—through deferred money. Snell’s contract of $182 million has $66 million deferred through 2046. This is similar to what the team did for Shohei Ohtani, who set an MLB record last year. Critics and fans might gnash their teeth, but the Dodgers just want to stack trophies and are building the team of their dreams.

Are the Dodgers ruining baseball with their spending, or just playing the game smarter than others?

The real reason rival fans are mad at Dodgers

The LA Dodgers would be too good, is the complaint from rival fans. But Ben Verlander, in his podcast, has short advice for all of them, and it’s—slow down. According to him, the rival fans are acting like the Dodgers have already won the next season and the year after. He cited that MLB has the longest streak in history without a repeat winner and that fans should just pump the brakes. Not just that, Ben Verlander even gave the real reason fans are mad.

According to the podcaster, the real reason is the reluctance of their respective teams to spend. Ben Verlander said on the Flippin Bats podcast, “You’re not mad at the Dodgers; you’re mad at the cheap franchise that you root for.” Harsh, but it also makes sense because deferred money isn’t just a concept limited to Dodgers. Instead, Verlander asked fans to be mad about the team owners who take in TV revenue and luxury tax payouts from the bigger teams and do nothing, similar to what Max Muncy said.

In the end, it is not just sports; it’s business too—you give some; you get more. So, if teams need to compete big, they need to open up their wallets, or maybe, play smart like the Dodgers, don’t you think? Let us know below
