Derek Jeter never really spoke about his personal life and family during his MLB career. Not much was known other than the fact that he was part of a tight-knit family and is close with his sister. The New York Yankees also kept his family life private. But once, in his book “The Life You Imagine”, Jeter opened up about his grandfather, particularly his exceptional routine.

Jeter himself was strict about his everyday routine during his career. The Yankees’ legendary shortstop would work out and practice regularly. But according to his book, he had a special admiration for his grandfather’s commitment to his everyday life.

Derek Jeter has always had a strong work ethic. The Yankees legend would always be focused on the task at hand, rather than allow anything to distract him. During the regular season, he aimed to win the Championship, and during the off-season, he would work on improving. In his book “The Life You Imagine”, Jeter once talked about his grandfather’s routine. He said that although his grandfather rarely came to see him play, Jeter appreciated his dedication to his job.

On page 104 of the book, Jeter wrote, “Even after I made it to the major leagues, he rarely made the 45-minute trip to Yankee stadium because he had to get up at 4:30 A.M. to go to work. That showed me something. As much as I would have liked to have my grandfather in the stands watching me, he had a job and he was dedicated to it. That made a lot of sense to me because I’ve always been dedicated to what I’m doing, too.”

Although the legendary shortstop did not see his grandfather at his games, he respected his dedication. In one of his books, he also made a strong statement on failure. But one thing is for sure, the hard-working mentality runs in the family. Furthermore, it seems that he wants to pass his family’s teachings onto his children.

Jeter will pass on his father’s teachings to his children

In an interview, Derek Jeter once said that he will not let his children win. The reason is that his father implemented this same policy with him. The Yankees legend believes that he doesn’t want his daughters to believe that achieving something is easy. Winning is hard, that is what makes it feel so good.
