Enrique Hernandez has always had a knack for delivering in big moments. His solo home run in the Los Angeles Dodgers series-clinching run over the San Diego Padres was no exception, but it was different given not just his bat made the headlines. In a postgame interview between Enrique and Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, he was asked what made this Dodgers team different from the previous one. And then came the drama.

Enrique took a pause, looking around for some five seconds, and asked, “Are we live”, to which, Rosenthal affirmed ‘yes’, and Hernandez didn’t take long to say, “The fact that we don’t give a f———,” with a mischievous grin. Rosenthal gave an ‘awkward’ reaction to this exchange; he thanked Hernandez and ended the interview. But, well, that colorful language quickly went viral, and as it turns out, Enrique got fined for it. Nonetheless, he recently revealed that it could have gotten worse!

Enrique Hernandez nearly missed the postseason run

Hernandez’s postgame moment nearly came with heavy consequences; however, the Dodgers star dodged a huge bullet more than the fans realized. During a recent interview with The Shop, Enrique Hernandez revealed that his slip-up could have cost him big, like a suspension—he could have missed some critical moments of the Dodgers’ postseason run, and that would make one costly error.

Elaborating further on this close save, Hernandez said, “I did get fined for that. I was going to get an even heftier fine, and I was going to get a game suspension, but having a good agent and having a good player union came in handy. They got rid of the suspension, and they got to lower down the fine a little bit, which was good.” Well, thanks to the behind-the-scenes maneuvering by his reps at Wasserman, the suspension didn’t come to be, and the fine was reduced. Moreover, Hernández did offer a formal apology the next day through MLB.com. But recently, he revealed it wasn’t quite heartfelt: “I did have to apologize, which you could say [was] 50/50 on the honesty part of it.”

Hernández reasoning behind his controversial language moment

Enrique Hernandez didn’t justify his use of colorful language on live TV, but he stood by what he said. Explaining that it was an answer coming from the bottom of his heart, Enrique didn’t think of describing it any other way. Hernandez further mentioned, “And I felt like I had already taken a while to think about my answer, ‘cause I didn’t want to answer it that way. But when I asked if we were live, he said yes, and I figured, ‘There’s got to be some sort of delay,’ you know?” Spoiler: There wasn’t!

While the critics may raise their eyebrows, Hernandez just believes that moment added something special to the Los Angeles Dodgers postseason run. “There was no delay, and I was on live TV cussing, and there was a lot of criticizing that. I think it made the postseason run a little more epic for the fans ’cause they bought into that. They bought into that mentality, and they had fun with it too.” Right now, the league doesn’t have any punishment for profanity on TV; however, MLB’s Rule 21 can allow punishment for behavior that’s not in the best interest of baseball.

But still, there is the Federal Communications Commission rule that can create havoc on the broadcaster. As for the future, Enrique Hernandez is looking to come back to the Dodgers; he noted feeling “addicted to playoff baseball.” Well, Enrique does keep things as real as they get; what was your reaction to his live TV moment?
