One of the most talked about baseball players in any off-season might finally get to rest. Carlos Correa has been in talks with various teams over the past few months, but couldn’t seem to come out of his free agency. The San Francisco Giants almost signed the shortstop until they retreated just hours before the official announcement. Then the Mets pounced on Correa, but once again, nothing came of it.

Now, it seems like Correa is back with the Minnesota Twins. He previously played for the Twins for one season, as well as seven seasons with the Houston Astros. Now as this drawn-out saga is finally coming to an end, the re-signing with the Twins has some people questioning Correa’s departure from the Astros. He could have apparently stayed with them and made a bigger deal.

Should Carlos Correa have stayed with the Astros?

It certainly didn’t harm the Houston Astros to have Correa on their team. The shortstop led them to their first World Series finals in 2017, which they ended up winning against the LA Dodgers. But after losing to the Atlanta Braves in 2021, Correa announced he would be leaving the team.

He then signed a three-year deal with the Twins but pulled out after only one season. As other teams swooped in to sign him, concerns were expressed over his physical. Ultimately, he wasn’t able to sign with either the Mets or the Giants. And now it looks like he’s back with the Twins.

According to Buster Olney, a renowned MLB insider, if only Correa had continued with the Astros, he would have been spared this long drama. The same deal could term and conditions would have been met by the Astros as well.

Are baseball fans over with the ongoing Correa saga?

Notably, it has been over two months since Correa has been the talking point in the MLB town because of his contract saga. After the Giants and Steve Cohen-owned the Mets failed to land the 28-year-old shortstop, the Twins signed the 2017 World Series champ on a six-year contract. And now, when this deal is finally official, MLB fans also weighed on their opinions on the $200 million deal.

Here is how they reacted:

Now that Correa has passed his physical with the Twins, things will hopefully go better for him. He has a lot of accolades to his name and has been well sought after. The 28-year-old was named the AL Rookie of the Year in 2015, is a two-time All-Star winner, and won the Platinum Glove Award in 2021.

Derek Falvey, president of baseball operations of the Twins, said, “We want him to finish his career as part of this organization.”
