MLB is seeing two wild scenarios being played out at the same time. On one hand, huge favorites like the Houston Astros are flailing but on the flip side, the Chicago Cubs are going from strength to strength. The sheer difference in their level was visible during their latest series where the North Siders handily defeated the Astronauts. But then the Cubs have an issue – their pitching is short of a starter. Wait, is anyone else hearing the name “Justin Verlander?”
The Astros’ superstar ace has just returned from an injury. Though he came back quite strong, Verlander could become a victim of the Astros’ rapid downfall. Now a Cubs insider has put forth a blockbuster scenario for Verlander. If things go the way they’re going now – could the Cubbies fulfill their 2017 wish and acquire Justin Verlander?
The story goes that in 2017 the Cubs were quite close to trading Verlander from the Detroit Tigers. However, the Astros hijacked the deal at the last moment and traded the ace to their team. Now The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney has made the case for Verlander to go to the Cubs. “The Cubs are playing like a team that will deserve a pitcher such as Verlander,” said Mooney,

The reasons for this trade are rather simple. If the Astros’ bad form continues, they’ll have to seriously consider using their massive trading chips to improve their squad. At 41, Verlander is still a well-sought-after pitcher and can prove to be highly useful for the Cubs. Especially because currently the North Siders are competing without Justin Steele.
If this scenario comes to pass, it could be one of the biggest trades of this season. The fact that the Astros could be turning into a seller soon is quite interesting. However, that won’t make the Cubs’ job any easier as there’s another team that might be waiting in the periphery for Verlander.

While the Cubs could find themselves becoming favorites, there’s another National League team that could spoil their plans. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the New York Mets might want to reunite with their co-ace. The fact that the Metsies are already paying the majority of Justin Verlander’s $43.3 million salary makes that a possibility. However, the Kings of the Queens will have to pay with some of their top prospects. Would they be willing to pay so much for an ace whose best years might be behind him?
Still, it’s undeniable that Verlander can still create a market frenzy for himself. The star has returned in top form even after a shoulder injury. That’s evidence of his longevity and quality – something that many teams would love to have. Perhaps that’s why it’s becoming obvious that the Houston Astros might want to think about trading Verlander seriously. There’s a lot they can gain from their ace.
