With a potential home series against the Minnesota Twins on the line, the New York Yankees started with 30-year-old pitcher Domingo German, who is yet to prove himself in the big leagues. In a must-win game against the Twins at the Bronx, Domingo German started off very well, by throwing three perfect innings. But the events of the game took a heated turn when a flag was raised after German’s pitches were turning more than usual.

As a result, the umpires checked German’s hands after the end of the third innings and detected an excess amount of rosin on German’s hand. Despite rosin being a permitted substance, due to the excess amount, the umpire asked German to “wash his hands,” before coming out to pitch again.

Despite being questioned for illegal substances, why was Domingo German not ejected?

On his way to the mound before the fourth innings, the umpire crew chief James Hoye intercepted German for another check. The Yankees starter failed the second check at the start of the fourth innings after a small amount of Rosin was detected under his pinky finger. This led to a prolonged discussion between the umpires, the Yankees skipper Aaron Boone, and a few other Pinstripes. Eventually, the decision to allow German to stay in the game was made given that Rosin is a legal substance.

However, Twins’ skipper Rocco Baldelli wasn’t happy to learn that German was allowed to stay even after his non-compliance. Baldelli left the dugout and walked toward the umpire crew, and a heated argument ensued, which concluded with the umpire tossing Baldelli.

After the game, Baldelli spoke about the incident, and said, “Their pitcher was asked to do something pertaining to a rule that’s been a focal point of a lot of discussion, and he failed to do what he was asked to do: Rid himself of something that he was carrying on his hand. That’s all.”

Boone too pointed out that German was in the wrong, and it the umpires raise the issue rightfully. He said, “So he washed his hands off, but before he goes out, he hits the rosin because he doesn’t go to the rosin a lot on the mound, which was something that got their attention.”
