Elimination is an integral part of every competition. However, the 2023 MLB season will be remembered because the underdog franchises overcame the renowned big teams to qualify for the World Series race this year. Unfortunately, the Seattle Mariners couldn’t make it this year. So, they missed the World Series another year. While the fans have been already depressed by the team’s consistent failures, their president of baseball operations of the team made a bizarre comment shocking the fans.

During every MLB game, the teams aim for the World Series. However, Jerry Dipoto revealed a completely different aim for his team and claimed they had reached the goal. While he expressed that their aim was a “bigger picture process”, he also asked for fans for a favor, “their patience.

After the playoff hopes were totally gone, Dipoto recently sat for an interview session with the media. He opened up about various aspects of the team, including their current activities and future goals. From what Dipoto said, fans, with utter surprise, discovered that their team had never been fighting for the World Series. Instead, they have been playing and fighting to maintain 54% winning streak. The president expressed, “If you go back and you look in a decade, those teams that win 54% of the time always wind up in the postseason and they more often than not wind up in a World Series. So there’s your bigger picture process.”

Dipoto went on to explain how the win percentage doesn’t always match the planned goal. ” Nobody wants to hear the goal this year is we’re gonna win 54% of the time. Because sometimes 54% is, one year you’re gonna win 60% another year you’re gonna win 50% you know? Now it’s whatever it is, but over time that type of mindset gets you there.

Post that, when while talking about the team’s future, he revealed that for him, teams that focus on their aim to win World Series by analyzing their year-to-year performance seem like “laying in the mud.” Hence, he asked the Mariners’ fans to have patience. Per him, “So we’re actually doing the fan base a favor in asking for their patience to win the World Series while we continue to build a sustainably good roster.

However, it hardly convinced the fans about the future goals of the team.

Dipoto’s Strategy vs Fans’ Getting Impatient

Since Dipoto joined, the winning rate has increased, but not exceptionally. They had 90 wins in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, it is reduced a bit to 88 games. Still, they have a 54% winning streak maintained. However, the Mariners have no World Series until now. The team has young talents to utilize and aim for the trophy, so fans’ getting impatient is also understandable.
