The New York Yankees may still believe they’re the kings of baseball, but not everyone is buying the nostalgia act. Nestor Cortes recently doubled down on the Yankees’ supposed dominance over the Dodgers, sparking a fiery response from an MLB veteran who wasn’t here for the fairy tale. Turns out, not everyone agrees that past glory guarantees present supremacy.

The 2024 World Series was one of the most one-sided series in baseball history. We know that many of the Yankees fans felt that they deserved to win this series. But almost everyone later cooled down and accepted the reality. However, that is not the case with Nestor Cortes. Even though he’s not a Pinstriper anymore, the pitcher is not ready to move on from the disastrous October final.

But MLB pitcher Brent Honeywell is having none of it, “They weren’t the best team. On paper, they weren’t the best team. And can’t say it with a straight face. They were not the best team. We were the best team.”

And the Los Angeles Dodgers were the better team. On paper, the Yankees had some big names but forget they were the ones who performed the least. The reason the Los Angeles Dodgers won was not only because they played well but because the Yankees fumbled many a time in crucial moments and almost handed the Dodgers the Fall Classic on a silver platter. And not to forget, Cortes was the one who got hit for the home run in Game 1 of the World Series.

And yet what the former Yankees pitcher said was, “People can say we made a lot of mistakes, which we did. But at the end of the day, we were the better team.”

Game 5 was a disaster for the Yankees. Their star players like Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo, and Anthony Volpe made some errors that led to the Dodgers snowballing the Yankees. Nestor Cortes saying the Yankees were the better team shows that Cortes is stuck in the past.

Fans erupt after Brent Honeywell destroys Nestor Cortes’ take on disastrous Yankees loss to Dodgers

Nestor Cortes just couldn’t let it go. Months after the Yankees’ Fall Classic collapse, he’s still insisting they were the “better team” — a take that sent Dodgers fans into a frenzy and even had some Yankees supporters rolling their eyes. The scoreboard told one story, but Cortes seemed determined to write his own. Too bad reality isn’t making revisions.

What’s your perspective on:

Yankees fans, is it time to let go of 2024, or does Cortes have a point?

Have an interesting take?

Even after watching his team lose 4 times, Cortes thinks the Yankees were better. And saying this after being one of the main reasons for their loss, is simply funny. And the Dodgers fans are having a field day with this. I mean, how does a team that got steamrolled four times still claim superiority? Baseball math doesn’t work like that, Mr. Cortes.

The Yankees had almost won the first game and then came Nestor Cortes. It didn’t even take a fully fit Freddie Freeman to destroy the Yankees with the Walk-off Grand Slam. And guess who was pitching? Nestor Cortes, of course. And from that very moment, the landslide had started. The New York Yankees could never recover from that.

This was every fan’s reaction after the comments by Nestor Cortes. Honeywell did a good job in shutting Cortes down, but even the fans have given him a reality check. Always remember, only the best teams win and on that day it depends on how you play. The Yankees played the fourth game well and won. But let’s be real, if being the best team was enough to win the World Series, the Dodgers would have already won it many times over.

While the Yankee fans and the Yankees organization have moved on from 2024, Cortes should have too. And that is exactly what his fans want. With him being traded to the Brewers, he should be looking at the upcoming season and not the past. He still has the chance to improve and take his team to face the Dodgers and have his revenge.

This is exactly the reaction you would expect from a fan who saw Cortes hand the Dodgers game 1. A fastball down the center to one of the best batters, what did he expect would happen? The ball disappeared for a Grand Slam and so did the Yankees’ chance of winning the World Series. This was also called a great upset by many of the Yankee fans. But shouting about it now? Cortes is making himself look like a circus.

At some point, you’ve got to read the room—and the scoreboard. The Yankees lost, the Dodgers won, and no amount of post-series storytelling is changing that. If Cortes wants redemption, he’ll have to earn it on the mound, not in interviews. Otherwise, he’s just pitching excuses now.
