Dodgers fans, we nearly lost one of our brightest stars in a split second. Bobby Miller, the 25-year-old star pitcher, had a terrifying encounter with a 105.5 mph line drive. He was just an inch away from a career-ruining disaster. With this, Miller has joined Clayton Kershaw, Dustin May, and Brusdar Graterol on the Dodger’s injured list — the last thing a Dodgers fan wanted to see. The details of this incident will have you biting your nails. But Miller isn’t one to stay down for long.

The pitcher had an accident at the Dodgers’ spring training opener on February 20, 2025. At the Camelback Ranch in the third inning, Miller threw an 80 mph curveball to Michael Busch, the Cubs infielder. Busch returned the ball with a 105.5 mph line drive. Bam! This happened to directly hit Miller and he fell to the ground, holding his head tight. In response, the medics got to him quickly but ultimately, Miller walked out of the field on his own. He had a noticeable injury, a red and black patch on the right front side of his head as he exited the game.

After the incident, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated that Miller would undergo concussion protocol to understand the seriousness of the injury.  However, Bobby Miller knows how to bounce back. After the incident, he took to X with a tweet that put fans at ease: “Thank you to everyone who has reached out. Really means a lot. Scary moment I’m good! All praise to the man above 🙏 can’t wait to get back on the mound 💪🏼.”

Along with his fans, Miller’s teammates were relieved to see him doing better. Max Muncy joked about how Miller was trying to keep it cool saying, “When the trainer asked if he knew where he was, he made a little joke about hanging a curveball.

This isn’t the first time for Miller though. After a great rookie season in 2023, where he had an 11–4 record with a 3.76 ERA over 22 starts, Miller’s 2024 season was full of injuries and inconsistency. He started the 2024 season with a bang, with a career-high 11 batters in his debut against the St. Louis Cardinals.

However, a right shoulder inflammation disrupted his successful momentum and kept him on the sidelines for two months. Even after returning to the field, Miller couldn’t reach his top form. He finished the season with an 8.52 ERA over 13 starts, very different from his rookie year. And Miller’s not the only name on the Dodgers’ increasing injury list.

Bobby Miller joins the Dodgers’ growing injury list

To add insult to injury, quite literally, the Dodgers’ IL keeps growing. Bobby Miller has now joined Clayton Kershaw, who is still recovering from his foot and knee surgeries conducted in November 2024. Kershaw expects to return in May or June.

Adding on, Dustin May suffered a bizarre injury in 2024 which caused him to miss the whole season as a salad leaf caused a critical esophageal tear. He would have joined the World Series squad if not for the “complete freak accident,” in his words; now May is expected to make a comeback in the 2025 season.

Additionally, Brusdar Graterol is recovering from labrum surgery, and whether or not he will show up for this season remains uncertain. Moreover, Freddie Freeman had an off-season ankle surgery in 2024. He expects to join the squad soon since he’s resumed swinging a bat, although, he hasn’t started running yet this offseason.

Furthermore, Max Muncy did his time on the 60-day injured list due to his oblique injury in 2024. Even Shohei Ohtani is recovering from shoulder surgery but should make his comeback this season on the mound.

Miller’s injury came in at the worst time possible as currently, the Dodgers lineup falls short with the team’s already thin pitching depth. Miller faced a season full of injuries and inconsistencies but his positive attitude and quick recovery give Dodgers fans some hope.
