Shohei Ohtani's 46th home run—more special than his 50th? What makes this one stand out?

Shohei Ohtani has broken the records of baseball greats; Alex Rodriguez, Babe Ruth, and more. Whether it’s his teammates, fans, or his competition, everybody is in pure awe of the Dodgers star and questioning whether there is anything he just can’t do. On Sunday, at Dodger Stadium, where the temperatures were at a record high of 103 degrees, Ohtani added another highlight to his season. He helped the team power through with a 4-0 win against the Cleveland Guardians, once again proving there’s seemingly nothing he can’t do.

During the game, the Japanese star launched his 46th home run of the season—but this time the shot was different. It was a massive 450-foot solo shot down the right-field line in the fifth inning which soared to a part of the stadium where no ball had ever landed before. The officials even had to review the shot to ensure it was fair, and that decision took a while to come. Fans, meanwhile, were waiting with bated breath and soon, they ruled it in Ohtani’s favor. But Max Muncy must have been rattled with the wait time as he took a jab on the review team in New York.

Shohei Ohtani’s home run left everyone stunned—from the fans in the stands to his own teammates. Max Muncy, a seasoned player himself, said he’d never seen a ball soar so high or reach that part of the stadium before. Max Muncy, after the game, also talked about the delay and took a jibe at New York’s review team, saying that they were too mesmerized by Ohtani. Muncy, with a grin, mentioned, “We were just curious why it was taking so long to look at the replay. Maybe the guys in New York were admiring it just as much as we were.”

Aaron Judge, although leading the MLB with 51 home runs, has slowed down over the last 11 games. He has not had one home run, which has allowed Dodgers star Ohtani to close the gap with the Yankees slugger. Max Muncy, meanwhile, also contributed to the team’s series-deciding win with a home run in the eighth inning.

And like that, Shohei Ohtani hit his 46th home run of the season. But this isn’t a surprise, given that he is on pace to do what everybody thinks: seizing the 50-50; an exclusive club that the Dodgers star might soon be inaugurating.

Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani have been the talk of the town all season. But who’s pulling ahead, and who’s falling behind in this heated race? Judge was on pace to reach the 60-home run record that he had set in 2022. And not just trailblaze there, but perhaps, even eclipse it. Meanwhile, Ohtani has been on the run to become the first-ever baseball player to make it into the 50-50 club – a record-breaking accent that would rewrite the history of baseball. But, things have taken a turn.

Aaron Judge is going through a slump at the moment. Over the last 11 games, Aaron Judge has posted a .175/.327/.250 batting line with no home runs, three RBIs, and 17 strikeouts. Meanwhile, Ohtani is still on pace to make his record. He has 46 home runs, a career-high score, and also a record-breaking 46 stole bases this season. He’s on track to shatter expectations, and it won’t be surprising to see him make it to 55-55 if all goes well! Plus, it’s not just the players, but the team, too, that’s at a starkly different pace.

The Dodgers are rolling toward the postseason in the NL West. The Yanks are having a hard time finding their footing meanwhile. Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Cubs put an end to their short-lived two-game winning streak. So, at this time, the tables are tilted to one side more. Meanwhile, there are even talks about a possible hex on Judge that has been making the rounds. Hex or not, both these superstars are under the microscope, and only time will tell who will come out on top.
