The Dodgers are grabbing fishing talents wherever they can. Not only do they have the Japanese market covered with stars like Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but now they have access to the Korean market too! And it is all possible because of their latest signing – Hye-seong Kim. He is a highly regarded infielder from the KBO. Kim has a three-year contract with the Dodgers, including a $12.5 million guarantee.

Additionally, if the team exercises its option for the 2028–2029 season, the deal could potentially exceed $22 million. Kim’s effectiveness is rewarded, and the Dodgers are given freedom with this type of system. Dodgers is now almost a pro in global talent scouting. But exactly how did the club land him? Word is that a two-way superstar helped convince Kim.

According to sports writer Noah Camras, Shohei Ohtani played a role in recruiting Hye-seong Kim to the Dodgers. Camaras wrote on X, “According to Korean media reports, Shohei Ohtani met with Hyeseong Kim in Los Angeles and ‘gave him a lot of advice’ during his free agent process. It appears the Dodgers superstar did some recruiting to land Kim.” It’s clear Ohtani has become an influential figure, not just for his on-field dominance but also for his mentorship and impact on international players transitioning to MLB.

The competition for Hye-seong Kim’s services was heating up, just hours before the deadline. Several major MLB teams were still vying for his attention. However, the offers were lower than initially anticipated—closer to $10 million. The Mariners, Angels, Dodgers, Padres, and Cubs all reportedly made offers, showing that Kim is a highly sought-after player. And, in the end, the Dodgers won Kim just like their 2024 championship.

Did Shohei Ohtani just become the Dodgers' secret weapon in global talent recruitment?

Have an interesting take?

Hye-seong Kim is only 25 and has already made his mark by being a consistent performer in the KBO since 2017. In 2024, he had an outstanding season, hitting .326/.383/.458 in 127 games. The Korean players hit about 11 home runs, 75 RBI, 90 runs, and 30 stolen bases. This newly minted Dodger has a career line of .304/.364/.403 which showcases his well-rounded offensive abilities.

So, where will he fit? The Dodgers have already started to create room for Kim on their 40-man roster. The club has made catcher Diego Cartaya go for assignment. Although Kim’s primary position is second base, he has also played shortstop and third base, giving the Dodgers more versatility. Los Angeles already has Max Muncy at third, Mookie Betts at shortstop, and Gavin Lux at second, so Kim will probably contend for playing time. But who knows! If the former KBO does well in spring training, he may even earn a spot in the starting lineup.

Kim is added to the Dodgers’ squad as they prepare to defend their championship after a strong season. Their depth is increased by the 25-year-old’s versatility as an infield player, with his bat being an additional potent weapon. With a combination of experience and potential, Hye-seong Kim might have a significant role for a talented Dodgers club aiming for another title.
