The Dodgers are projected to win the 2025 World Series. Insiders and fans are betting on them for having depth in the lineup. But what about their archrival, the Yankees? Down with the injuries of their premier players. The Yankees’ injuries got so bad that they are just one injury away before their pitching rotation gets blown out. So, why don’t the two teams come together for a trade? Well, the Yankees are reportedly in talks with the Dodgers to get one of their pitchers onboard: veteran RH pitcher Tony Gonsolin. Will it work for the Bronx? How are the two teams poles apart this year?

It all started after the Yankees lost Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil due to injuries, their two starting pitchers. On the other hand, the Dodgers got Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Clayton Kershaw, and Dustin May as their starting lineup. Gonsolin is highly unlikely to get to start, considering talents like Roki Sasaki are still benched. So, why not trade Gonsolin to the team where he can start? Why not the Yankees, who desperately need some new blood in pitching?

As per MLB analyst Zach Pressnell, “It wouldn’t be crazy to think the Dodgers could explore the idea of trading Gonsolin when he returns from injury. And the Yankees would be the perfect landing spot.” The Yankees can afford the $5.4 million for a pitcher coming up with a 16-1 record and 119 SOs from 2024. However, who will the Yankees trade for Gonsolin? One of the top prospects of the Yankees, Everson Pereira, is rumored. The 23-year-old is yet to play in the major, but his 2024 stint of 10 HRs and 27 RBIs in Triple-A Scranton is worthy enough for the Dodgers.

So, who the Yankees, the most decorated team in the MLB, left trailing behind the Dodgers? Considering that both teams faced each other in the World Series last year, what went wrong for the Bronx and right for the Dodgers since then?

The Dodgers and Yankees are at the opposite pole this year

Since last year’s World Series win, the Dodgers went into an overdrive mode, splashing money to get the biggest names for the team. Outcome? Names like Kirby Yates, Roki Sasaki, and Tanner Scott all got landed with them. Hence, the best team from last year just got to the next level this year. And the Yankees? They failed to go dollar-to-dollar against the Dodgers and even lost their star Juan Soto to the Mets. The financial muscle of the Dodgers got so flexed this offseason that Yankees GM Brian Cashman acknowledged their dominance. “Ultimately, the Dodgers have raised the bar.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is trading for Tony Gonsolin the Yankees' best shot at reviving their pitching rotation?

Have an interesting take?

The Yankees’ payroll this year is $272 million, placing them fourth behind the Phillies. The Dodgers have a $321 million payroll this year, standing at the top. This shows how the Dodgers went all out in this offseason, which the Yankees had failed to do. The Yankees took a different approach to betting on the young prospects this year and fielding a more athletic team. This year, players like Jasson Dominguez, Jazz Chisholm, and Carlos Carrasco are going to start for the Bronx. Now if they can trade Gonsolin, hope will be there with the Yankees.
