In Sports we live for the one in a million moment. A moonshot that should never have been. An underdog that had no business winning the title. And while the New York Yankees may have been the winningest team in baseball for a large part of history, this season has certainly not been the same. But with their latest roster additions, could that all be set to change?

The New York Yankees have recently seen an uptick in their form. While faltering for a majority of the season, it seems that the threat of finally breaking their streak of 30 years in MLB without a losing record was what was needed to galvanize the roster into action. With captain and 2022 Homerun King Aaron Judge leading the offensive charge and ace Gerrit Cole resolute in defense, could the Yankees be set to find their heroes from another spot altogether?

It’s an old adage in baseball but its all about getting to the postseason. What you can make of it once there is down to the games on the day, but the regular season isn’t about your record there, it just about giving yourself a shot. And the New York Yankees, while still carefully holding a 0.500 record with 69 wins and losses, could still be in with a shot.

The Yankees’ best chance at the post season looks to be through the Wild Card spot for which they will have to jump the Boston Red Sox and the Blue Jays in the standings. Currently they sit 7 games out of the Wild Card standings but they are in an extremely advantageous position. With a Jasson Dominguez shaped boost to their batting lineup, the Yankees offense is starting to click and really nothing seems impossible at the moment.

According to FanGraphs, of all the teams in AL Wild Card contention and danger of dropping out, including the Texas Rangers, the Yankees have the easiest schedule to close out the season. So even with the worst record, their recent form could be harkening to a Yankees final push that could see them qualify.

FanGraphs ranks the Yankees’ schedule at 0.498 while all other contending teams have at least a 0.510 or above. Not a significant margin by any means, but with any luck and form, both of which have favored the Yankees recently, a far enough gap for the Yankees to make it count.

The Yankees still have some crucial fixtures against the contending teams yet to be played which could potentially decide both the franchise’s seasons. The Pinstripes are yet to play out 4 games against historic rivals in the Boston Red Sox and 6 games against the Blue Jays both of whom are in the race with the Yankees for the AL Wild Card Spot.

If the Yankees win any of those series, their bid for the post-season will see a significant boost. FanGraphs has currently pegged the Yankees’ chances at making the post-season at 0.4 percent but if sport has taught us anything it is that even if there is a chance, that’s more than enough.

With renewed belief from the baby Bombers in Jasson Dominguez and Austin Wells in the clubhouse, the Yankees could be set for a historic run-in for the post-season. And who really knows, maybe they could even add to their tally of 27 rings this season.
