“Do Something Different…”: How Derek Jeter’s Sister Sharlee Jeter Once Made a Life-Altering Decision to Get Out of Her Brother’s Shadow

Many personalities have found success in this sports world. But few had a greater impact that changed the future. Former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter is one such name. Because of his immense success and personal accomplishments, he became the face of the MLB world. And because of it, Jeter reached superstardom that everyone recognized. Although it eased many things for him, it added to the competition and comparisons. Not only the baseball field but also in his home and family. His sister Sharlee Jeter focused on the same in one of her interviews.

Derek being a big brother, guided his sister to do well in life. But with each success at the diamond, he unintentionally added to the wave of comparisons that followed Sharlee. And because of this, she had to change the path in her life to counter it before she joined her college. Notably, this revelation came years before, Hannah Jeter focused on the challenges that MLB legend’s aura has brought into their life.

Sharlee Jeter Not to Pursue Sports Like Brother Derek Jeter

Derek Jeter is an inspiration for many, all thanks to his glorious career. It did inspire his sister Sharlee but not in a sporting way. Instead, it gave her motivation to do something different. Sharlee revealed this during an interview with UNFLTRD TV that aired seven years back.

While talking about his brother and her decision not to choose sports in college, Sharlee said, “I had made a decision before I applied to Spelman that I wasn’t going to go on to play sports in college. And that was part of me being young and trying to get you know, out of Derek’s shadow and not do exactly what he had done.”

She added, “Now that I’m older I you know, would have probably taken it a little differently. But then I just wanted to go off on my own and do something different and if I played softball then I would be constantly compared.”

The statement from Sharlee reflected a different side to Derek Jeter’s success. It made her choose mathematics as her subject. And now she is using that knowledge to help others through the Turn 2 foundation. Though she is not the only recipient of it.

Years later, Hannah also focused on the same during the interview while discussing all the attention that comes with Jeter.

Hannah herself is an inspiration for many. The former supermodel had all the success that brought her immense love and attention. And when she married Derek Jeter, it doubled up and continues to follow them wherever they go.
