The New York Yankees fans are eager to see DJ LeMahieu back in the lineup soon. However, there might be some not-so-great news. The fans’ wait could extend a little longer as the infielder is undergoing additional tests due to lingering soreness. The veteran has been sidelined since spring training with a fractured right foot, and the wait for his return is far from over.
Just a day ago, the updates seemed promising. Manager Aaron Boone displayed optimism about LeMahieu rejoining the team for their series against the Baltimore Orioles later this week. A planned four-game rehab stint with Double-A Somerset was seen as the final hurdle before his return. However, it seems like “he came in still a little bit sore today”.

The plans of the four-game rehab stint were thrown into disarray when LeMahieu experienced soreness after one inning on Tuesday in his first rehab game. Boone shared, “We sent him there because he came in still a little bit sore today, so we want to know what we’re dealing with.” On one hand, there is an urgency to get the 35-year-old back to the diamond as soon as possible. On the other, there is a sense of caution to avoid any future injuries that could jeopardize the Yankees’ chances.

The latest tests conducted revealed the underlying cause of soreness. It was residual edema, or persistent swelling, in LeMahieu’s foot. This little setback yet again means the Yankees will be without their starting third baseman “for at least a week,” as Boone stated. The team would be reassessing his status on a weekly basis to track his progress.
This news comes as a blow to both LeMahieu and the Yanks. LeMahieu, willing to rejoin the team at the earliest, reportedly felt “chomping at the bit” after weeks of positive recovery. In the meantime, the Yankees are devoid of LeMahieu’s veteran presence and steady production at the hot corner.
Looking Ahead Despite A Cloud of Uncertainty

While the playoffs pressure is still distant, that is a looming reality. To be able to ace it, the Yankees need all hands on deck. LeMahieu’s longer-than-expected recovery creates uncertainty about the team’s infield setup. Oswaldo Cabrera, who filled in really well during LeMahieu’s absence, might have to remain at third base. With that, the other players would be pushed out of their usual positions.
This latest development, though frustrating, doesn’t necessarily derail LeMahieu’s season. The Yankees continue to be hopeful for his return in the near future. Nevertheless, the lingering effects of his foot injury serve as a reminder of the importance and impact of player health.
