The Mariners had all the key pieces in place—well, almost. However, as another offseason passes, the same lingering question remains: did they do enough? As the opening day countdown continues, fans seem to be upset with the team, and insiders are brutally calling them out.

On the episode of Flippin’ Bats with Ben Verlander, an insider didn’t mince his words and went all out talking about the Mariners. He said, “Seattle Mariners are plus 210 to win the division. Ultimately just disappointing. Disappointing team.” Looks like he really wanted to believe them, as he added, “I continually want to believe in this Seattle Mariners team because of one reason. I guess technically five reasons, and that’s the starting rotation.” He has a good point. The Mariners’ rotation is power-packed with Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, George Kirby, Brian Wu, and Emerson Hancock.

The Mariners have 5 elite arms and the insider emphasized how well they could be utilized: “With this rotation that the Mariners have, they should easily be a top team in baseball.” However, Seattle isn’t building around them. He brutally said, “They continually do nothing when it comes to their offense.” Well, let’s take a moment to sink that in. The Mariners have what he calls, “the best rotation in baseball, to be honest. One through five, that’s absolutely insane.” According to him, the team refuses to go out and add the offensive firepower required to actually be able to win.

Justin Turner, who was a key piece of the Mariners in the previous season, was baffled by their approach. He witnessed the team fall one game short of the playoffs and then do nothing to fix the issue. It was simply a head-scratcher for him.

The frustration between fans and insiders is real. At this point, it seems like the mariners aren’t making most of what they have. The ones who want to believe in them are now running out of patience.

Mariners Cut Two Pitchers in Latest Roster Adjustments

Even though the recent headlines were around the release of veteran outfielder Mitch Haniger, the Mariners didn’t stop there. A fresh wave of roster moves followed, shuffling the bullpen mix.

Among all the shuffling, Seattle optioned right-handed pitcher Casey Legumina, infielder Leo Rivas, and catcher Blake Hunt to Triple-A Tacoma. The left-handed pitcher Brandyn Garcia and Hunt (again) were also reassigned to minor league camp. Interestingly, that’s not even the biggest move. The Mariners have outrighted pitchers Drew Pomeranz and Jesse Hahn.

36-year-old, Pomeranz, a lefty and former All-Star was hoping for a return after signing a minor league deal with the Mariners in December. His last major league stint came in 2021 with the Padres. There, he recorded a remarkable 1.75 ERA in 27 appearances. However, this spring his numbers weren’t quite as good—he put up a 4.70 ERA in 7.2 innings pitched.

On the other hand, Hahn had a late-season stint with Tacoma last year and was viewed as a bullpen contender. Dan Wilson, Mariners manager, contended with him earlier in the camp. But a rough spring—an 11.25 ERA in eight innings—made the decision easy.
