Born on December 7th, 1936 in Boston, Massachusetts, Flavin was an alumnus of Stonehill College. A multi-talented character, he gained prominence as a journalist, broadcaster, and playwright altogether. Flavin eventually became a Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall Of Fame inductee in 2011. And now, when Flavin is no more, baseball fans also paid their tribute to the legendary Red Sox voice.
What did the fans have to say about the late legendary Boston Red Sox announcer?
It was while working for WBZ TV that Flavin made his association with the Red Sox. Flavin rose to stardom after he rewrote the lyrics and the plot of the classic poem, ‘Casey at the Bat’. He also tweaked the title to ‘Teddy at the Bat’. Thus, the poem became a tribute to the MLB legend and former Red Sox star Ted Williams.?
Flavin once famously took a trip with legendary MLB duo and former Red Sox stars Dom DiMaggio and Johnny Pesky. They traveled from Massachusetts to Florida in 2001 to meet the gravely ill Williams. Making the best use of the opportunity, Flavin recited his poem in the presence of the elite trio.

Later on, Flavin also reprised the recitation at William’s memorial ceremony in Fenway Park. The renowned announcer wrote numerous poems about the Red Sox. He compiled the poems into a book of poetry titled Red Sox Rhymes: Verses and Curses.
The Red Sox administration posted the news of Flavin’s death on their official Twitter account, quoting, “Dick Flavin was a fixture on Boston TV, a familiar face and voice at Fenway, and our own beloved poet laureate. Our hearts are with the Flavin family. His words and warmth will always be part of the organization.”?

Sad news.. always remember doing a tour of fenway a couple of days after my first ever game in 2013, Whilst we were on the tour up on the Green Monster, Dick Flavin passed by as a surprise to say hello to everyone and he read one of his poems – such a great memory of a great man.
