Bananas are innocent fruit. These sweet, delectable treats are rich in potassium and fiber and are an important part of a healthy diet. But when turned into costumes, bananas are only one thing—a distraction. Although Texas Rangers fans tried to use them during the World Series at Globe Life Field, the situation turned rather hilarious.

As the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Merrill Kelly took his spot on the mound, in a bizarre turn of events, the camera panned to the back of the plate. There, three individuals dressed in banana costumes were engaging in shenanigans in a bid to distract the D-backs pitcher. As peculiar as it was, the question is whether it worked.

As the Texas Rangers faced off against the spirited Arizona Diamondbacks in the all-important second game, the stakes were high. A win here would have seen the Lone Star State take one step closer to their first title. For the Snakes, a win would have brought life back to their campaign. With so much on the cards, a little distraction could have been detrimental, and that was what the banana boys had hoped for. Unfortunately, or rather, fortunately, their attempt didn’t quite go as planned as the D-backs steamrolled the Rangers 9-1.

The incident garnered a lot of opinions on social media while dividing views. While some saw it as a harmless prank, others were not convinced and deemed it against the spirit of fair competition. However, during a post-match interview, when asked if while pitching he noticed the banana boys, Merrill Kelly replied in the negative.

He simply responded, “I did not, I did not“. Helping his team to a brilliant Game 2 victory, the efforts of the offenders failed dramatically. Interestingly, as many may know, it was not the first time the banana boys were seen in action.

Banana boys are repeat offenders

Game 6 of the ALCS was an interesting time. As the Rangers took on the defending World Series champs, the Houston Astros, at the same venue, a banana boy showed up. Apparently an avid Rangers fan, his he mission was the same: distract the opposition Astros. The unexpected novelty garnered enough attention and went viral, but it did little to help his team’s cause. The Rangers suffered a 10-3 drubbing with a similar result this time.
