Pete Alonso’s free agency has become this offseason’s headline. And for good reason. After years of filling the stands at Citi Field with towering blasts, Alonso finds himself in a peculiar spot: still without a long-term, big-money deal. The latest development has added to the drama. Alonso’s relationship with the Mets. It seems like the former Mets player could not wait and constructed an offer himself.

According to former Mets GM Jim Duquette, a reliable source has confirmed that Alonso and his camp have reached out to the team. Yes, you read that right: the Polar Bear himself has made the first move. For months, there’s been this cloud of uncertainty hovering over Alonso’s free agency—negotiations, speculation, rumors. But now, Scott Boras, Alonso’s agent has crafted a deal for the Mets.

According to former Mets GM Jim Duquette, things have become serious. On Friday, Duquette dropped a bombshell tweet that sent Mets fans into a frenzy: Pete Alonso’s camp has officially offered the Mets a three-year deal with opt-outs. MLB Tonight discussed what Duquette wrote on X. Ron Darling who was present at this discussion commented, “Pete [Alonso] has an interesting history. The only team he’s ever been with… this may be an olive branch.” A three-year deal with the flexibility of opt-outs?

That’s a clever move from Alonso—giving the Mets the chance to lock him down for a few more years.  This would also allow Alonso to test the waters again, should the market or his performance change. It’s a deal only available to one team right now. Yes, you’re right—the Mets are the exclusive recipients of this offer. No other teams are involved… at least, not for the time being. It’s almost as if Pete and his camp are saying, “We want to stay in New York, but here’s a deal that gives both sides flexibility. If you’re serious about keeping us, now’s your chance.”

For the club, this offer has to be tempting

What’s your perspective on:

Will the Mets take Alonso's olive branch, or is it time for a new chapter?

Have an interesting take?

It’s evident that flexibility is essential when rumors circulated that Alonso’s team is amenable to a temporary agreement with opt-outs. Given their prior commitment to Juan Soto‘s 15-year contract, this deal might be more in line with the Mets’ attraction for shorter contracts. Although short-term, the exact financial amounts involved are still unknown. Alonso’s team is probably trying to negotiate a contract that takes into account his exceptional strength and durability.

Alonso is the best first baseman available, but it’s still unclear how his skills will develop with age. Scouts adore his power, but there are still concerns about his defense and on-base abilities. After all, the Mets have other internal choices. Even if Alonso is still a darling among fans and a domestic hero, if they cannot agree on a deal, the team may look at other options. To give prospects like Brett Baty or Ronny Mauricio a chance, they might try to move Mark Vientos to first base and add a third baseman, or go for another first baseman.

The Mets now have the upper hand, even though a reunion between Alonso and the team makes perfect sense on paper. Will they choose a more adaptable, temporary option or will they pay a hefty price for their star slugger? The upcoming weeks will be pivotal in determining whether the Polar Bear remains in Queens for long or if a new chapter in his career awaits.
