The New York Mets’ fans were excited with hopes that another star power could come their way. SNY MLB insider Andy Martino dropped a bombshell—the team had “checked in” with the Toronto Blue Jays about getting Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Now, the four-time all-star is one of the most electrifying hitters, and given that he has just one year left before hitting free agency, the rumors are swirling around, especially with Mets fans reading Martino’s words.
But this delight would only last so long as Martino called the idea “fantasy baseball.” He mentioned that it is highly uncertain if the Blue Jays would even entertain offers on the franchise players. Plus, if they did, the Mets have spent a truckload, the most in MLB this off-season, so they probably don’t have room for another such big deal. Now, as if Mets fans didn’t have it enough, echoing Martino’s sentiment, New York Post’s insider Jon Heyman has chimed in with his serious doubts over Guerrero Jr.’s move to Queens.
Is Guerrero Jr. in orange and blue now just a pipe dream?

Jon Heyman’s remarks on B/R Walk-Off dismissed the Mets’ dreams of having Vlad on the team. During the January 15 show, Heyman gave the fans a reality check; now that a possible trade was out of the picture for Guerrero Jr., Heymen said, “That’s my issue with [Guerrero Jr. to the Mets]; I just don’t see it. I mean, the Jays just signed [Jeff] Hoffman; they are trying for Sasaki. Obviously, they can’t be trading Vlad anytime soon before Sasaki makes his decision. Once Sasaki signs, and he’s going there, they certainly can’t trade [Guerrero].” Heyman indicated Jay’s recent moves suggest they are committed to competing, so why would they key move their cornerstone?
Heyman does not see Vladdy getting traded no matter what.
I find this very odd because if they go with their current team into the season, they’re not a playoff team and they’re going to lose him for nothing

Beyond that, Heyman also questioned whether team president Mark Shapiro, with just a year left on his contract, would risk punting the season by moving away their franchise cornerstone. “Is he really punting on this year? I mean, they’re already in for a lot of money. They should have made the playoffs last year with the team that they had on the field. To me, [trading Guerrero Jr.] is a punt. If you’re trading a great player like that, you’re not in it,” Heyman noted.
But while this is great for the Toronto Blue Jays, the risk factor is on. They had a disappointing finish last season, and Guerrero Jr. is looking at $500 million ahead. So Vladimir Guerrero Jr. could go looking for greener pastures somewhere else. Mets fans just have to have patience and wait another year. However, right now a worst-case scenario is looming, and no, it’s not the Mets but the possibility of fans seeing Vlad in an AL East rival uniform!
Boston to clinch Vladimir Guerrero Jr. next off-season?
For the Toronto Blue Jays, losing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would be devastating. But losing him to the Boston Red Sox would be a nightmare scenario. But that’s exactly what Jon Heyman suggested during his livestream. He hinted that Boston might be the frontrunner when it comes to Vlad when he hits free agency next season. “I do think they’re interested in Vlad Guerrero. That one I’ll say… I do think that they love Vlad Guerrero over in Boston, and as a free agent, if he doesn’t sign with the Blue Jays, I’m saying Boston might have a good shot there,” said Heyman.

This fit couldn’t be more perfect and more painful for the Jays. Guerrero’s power would thrive at Fenway Park, with the Green Monster in left field; pair him up with Rafael Devers, and the middle order will be potent. But this would force Toronto to meet their former star 13 times a season—while Guerrero’s career numbers make this deal even more sensible; he has a .356 average, 10 home runs, and 44 RBIs, so a trade might not be in the picture; the Jays need to prep.
The team has to bolster the roster to ensure Guerrero Jr. ends up staying. Now the 26-year-old is expecting to settle the contract talks before spring training, so just a few weeks are left. The Toronto Blue Jays office knows the stakes are high. Guerrero Jr. is coming off a hot playing year with 30 homers and 103 RBIs. If they can’t make a good enough offer, the Boston Red Sox could just pounce on the apple of their eye!
