Contract negotiation is something not every player is very good at. But that is not the case for the high-profile MLB ace Corbin Burnes who just signed a long-term contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Notably, Burnes is one of the best aces in the MLB right now and there could not be a better time to negotiate his new contract. Not only did Burnes sign a lucrative contract with the D’backs, but the former Brewer was smart enough to reject teams like the Blue Jays and SF Giants.

The Giants’ offer was higher, but Burnes ultimately chose a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks that was worth $210 million over six years. On the surface, that might seem like a step-down. But in reality, it might have been a savvy move. Why? Because the difference in taxes between California and Arizona would have meant Burnes would end up with far less of the Giants’ offer.

The difference in tax rates made Corbin Burnes choose the D-backs

California’s income tax rate sits at a hefty 9.3%, which would have taken a significant chunk out of Burnes’ salary if he’d signed with the Giants. On the other hand, Arizona’s tax rate is much lower, at 4.54%. The difference is huge, potentially millions of dollars over the life of the contract. But there’s another factor: Arizona is Burnes’ home state. Playing close to home not only means lower taxes but also provides personal and lifestyle benefits that money alone can’t buy.

So while the Giants’ offer was higher on paper, Burnes made a smart, calculated move. The pitcher took advantage of his home state’s tax advantages. The ace right-hander has agreed to a six-year, $210 million deal with the Arizona D-backs, according to a source confirmed by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The contract also includes an opt-out clause after the 2026 season, giving Burnes some flexibility. While the D-backs haven’t officially announced the deal yet, it’s clear that they’ve locked down one of the most coveted pitchers.

Arizona could use Burnes’ postseason experience

Corbin Burnes is coming off an excellent season with the Baltimore Orioles in 2024. The Cy Young contender has been a dominant force on the mound. The pitcher posted a 15-9 record with a dazzling 2.92 ERA over 194 1/3 innings. In 32 starts, he racked up 181 strikeouts, earning his fourth consecutive All-Star nod. Corbin Burnes has helped lead both the Milwaukee Brewers and Baltimore Orioles to the postseason.

Did Corbin Burnes outsmart the Giants by choosing Arizona for tax benefits and personal comfort?

Have an interesting take?

During his time with the Brewers, Burnes was a crucial part of their pitching staff. The 30-year-old guided them to the playoffs as a Wild Card team in 2020 and as NL Central champs in 2021 and 2023. Now, after seven impressive seasons in the big leagues, Burnes is a free agent for the first time. The 2018 debutant is now ready to take his talents to Arizona. Drafted by the Brewers in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft, Burnes has built an amazing career.

The Bakersfield native has been as consistent as they come. Now, Burnes is looking to bring that postseason experience to the Diamondbacks and make them a force in the NL. Even if Arizona did get Burnes because of taxation reasons, the club should be glad because Burnes is one of the most complete and unhittable pitchers. Now all we can do is wait for the official confirmation from Arizona. Do you think Corbin Burnes chose the right team?
