Miguel Cabrera probably never thought of receiving such a farewell gift. Teams and players always try to make the farewell special for the retiring legends. They prepare their gifts and events to create special moments to honor their achievements. But what Cabrera received on Thursday went beyond everything.

Oakland Athletics’ performance was not up to the mark from the beginning of the 2023 season. Their last game defeat against Detroit Tigers has shut their way to qualify for the Playoffs. That was not surprising to the fans. What surprised them more was the treatment the team owner provided the Tigers’ legend despite billions of net worth. They presented the 2003 World Series Champion with an $80 gift.

As Cabrera’s retirement approaches, teams are preparing gifts to celebrate his successful baseball career. Among all, the Oakland Athletics’ gift was not only the most surprising to the retiring legend but probably the most memorable too. When other teams like the Los Angeles Angels bid him goodbye with Surfboard, the Oakland owner finished it with a Wine Bottle. An Instagram post by Jomboy Media shows a picture of the ceremony and the price of the bottle. It was from the nearby Napa Valley. While the Wine Bottle as a gift is not rare, it’s cheap price is something that seems like an insult to the legend.

Though it created a wave of dissatisfaction among the fans, the legend didn’t mind. He rather accepted it as normal with a smile. While going off the field, Cabrera even holds the bottle in a way that he’s gonna drink the wine from it. This present has created a blow of laughter among the fans. They mocked the team and its owner brutally. However, the game was still not a good one for the Athletics. They again faced a 7-3 defeat.

While both teams tried their best, Tarik Skubal helped the Tigers take the lead with his season-high 10 Strikeouts in Seven innings. Along with him came Kerry Carpenter, who got his 9th multi-hit in the game. Later Matt Vierling added two hits and an RBI. While Brent Rooker hit his 28th Home Run in the game, it could not save them from drowning. Though the game was not thrilling, the farewell ceremony will make it memorable. Probably no one ever received an $80 wine bottle as a gift in MLB history.

Though the Oakland Athletics didn’t show honor to the retiring Tigers’ legend, other teams did. As the MLB season comes to an end, big franchises like the Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Guardians presented unique gifts to the legend to acknowledge his contribution to the sport. While Angels’ farewell ceremony was unique enough, the Guardians went another step forward to honor him. They gave him a guitar.
