The New York Yankees are under fire once again. Fans believe the front office needs significant changes to make the Yankees a World Series-caliber team again. Many call out the Steinbrenner family, manager Aaron Boone, and general manager Brian Cashman. With their series of recent losses, fans are understandably furious. But for the foreseeable future, no changes seem forthcoming. However, the franchise’s owner Hal Steinbrenner agrees with whatever his managers say and even recently spoke out in their defense.

Since Aaron Judge hurt his toe at Dodger Stadium, things have gone downhill for the Yankees. With Anthony Volpe still in the lineup, despite no Triple-A experience, many feel the front office needs to improve his MLB experience. Veteran names like Josh Donaldson and Giancarlo Stanton disappoint many with their latest performances. But Hal Steinbrenner stands firm in his support of the managers.

Brian Cashman is doing the job just fine, according to Hal Steinbrenner

The Steinbrenner family has long since retained ownership of the Pinstripes, but long gone are the days when managers would be hired and fired regularly. Hal doesn’t do it quite like his dad George did, and the difference is palpable to many. However, for Hal, Cashman is here to stay. “I see a good leader, a good leader of his people, respect him greatly. Like me, he believes in balance and we get a lot of noise about being too analytical but there are numerous other teams, including the Rays, that are definitely more analytical than we are…,” Steinbrenner told Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman on their podcast.

Interestingly, Cashman was trending on social media just recently, for what Bronx fans call his flurry of bad trade decisions that have cost the team over the years.

Brian Cashman has been the GM since 1998 and in 2022, the Yankees signed him to another four-year contract. While he regularly takes flak from fans, the franchise clearly likes him. “I like his balance, he’s willing to be balanced. Other GMs might not be so and we’ve got a good relationship. And we’re not afraid to say hard things to each other in a healthy, productive way,” Hal Steinbrenner continued.

His stance on Boone is much the same.

According to Hal, the New York Yankees respect Aaron Boone

The Bronx Bombers affectionately call their manager Boonie and play around with him, showing an easy relationship. This is exactly what Steinbrenner values. “One of the most important things for me is that he has to respect the players. They want to play for him and they want to win for him. If I saw all that disappear, then I’d make a change. And I’ve talked to Aaron about this,” he told Sherman and Heyman.

Steinbrenner is not overly concerned with fan opinions. “People can say what they wanna say about players not wanting to, that’s just not true. They do, they wanna play for him, they wanna win for him, they respect him. I think he’s a good leader, he’s a good communicator.” He continued, “I could take any manager and look at the 100 decisions they made in a game, and I’m sure there’s a ton I don’t agree with. But I think he does a good job, just like Cash does.”

The 13-year World Series drought may turn into 14 years in 2023, but Steinbrenner has faith in his front office. Regardless of the team’s downhill performance and the fervent opinions of fans, Hal believes in both Cashman and Boone and address them as good leaders who are doing justice to their jobs.
