Derek Jeter’s Mother Once Divulged Her “Ready to Attack” Mentality During a Difficult Period For Her Son

Being a part of the spotlight sure comes with its perks; but as every coin has its two sides, sometimes, fame also comes with a curse. Fame is something that needs to be handled with care and Derek Jeter did just that. However, no matter how careful one might be, some negative attention still seeps through; Especially in a city that thrums with life around every corner.

Derek Jeter’s protective instinct came from his mother 

During the era when Derek Jeter and his fellow New York Yankees were busy rewriting the Bronx Bomber’s dynasty with their continuous World Series victories, the media scrutiny on them was unfathomable. Every single move they made was under the microscope, and any slight misstep could have resulted in a tidal wave of negative publicity. 

Despite Captain Clutch’s best efforts, some exaggerated pieces of news still managed to make headlines. But Jeter’s protective instincts towards the ones he loved never waned. He made sure to shield his parents from the unrelenting attention that came with his fame.

His mother, Dorothy, is the same. According to the docuseries, ‘The Captain,’ this is what she said about the negative press, “Lots of time they sheltered me from some of that – a lot of that stuff. I had protectiveness in me. So if somebody says something that I know is not true or fair to my son, I’m ready to attack even though, you know, what am I gonna do? But that’s an instinct I feel as a mom.”

Families indeed look out for each other and while Jeter handled the attention well, his mother still took notice and remained fiercely protective of her son. 

Derek Jeter had resilience instilled in him from a young age

Maybe this is how he learned how to navigate the rough waters of negative attention with grace and perseverance.
