During an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Vault, the shortstop’s father, Dr. Charles Jeter, shared an example of Jeter’s shy behavior that is conservative and funny at the same time.
Being sheltered and shy is a good thing, but after a point in life, a person has to talk to people in order to grow in his career and personal life as well. Jeter’s father did whatever he could to make his son a little less shy than he was.
What was the story that Dr. Charles shared about Derek Jeter?
The story is of the time when Derek Jeter was about to complete his eighth grade and was ready to switch from a parochial school to a public one. At that time, Jeter’s parents, as a way to help toughen him up, sent him over to play basketball with some older kids. “When he was in the eighth grade and was about to switch from parochial school to a public school, we sent him over to the Y to play basketball against older kids as a way of toughening him up. He went, but he took his mother with him.” Said Sanderson Charles Jeter.
Jeter went there but had his mother with him. Seems like the shortstop always knew how to turn things around on his side. But that was not the only thing that his father shared about him. He said when Jeter was about 12 or 13 years of age, he took him to the University of Michigan for their basketball camp.
“When it was time for him to meet the other kids, I had to push him to make conversation,” said Senior Jeter.
