The New York Yankees need no introduction. They are in the conversation for the greatest franchise in all of sports. Ever since being founded, they have been the MLB’s biggest draw. There are millions of fans across the globe who love this team, and millions more who hate their guts. From generation to generation, some of the greatest players have spent their prime years wearing the famous pinstripes. Since their most recent championship in 2009, the Yankees have failed to appear in the fall classic. The recent 2023 season has been an absolute disaster, their worst since 1992.
Most things that could go wrong did go wrong. There were challenges when it came to player development and acquisition. The management seemed clueless; the trades were poor, and the contacts were too expensive. The unavailability of Aaron Judge and over-reliance on underperforming veterans exacerbated their issues. In the midst of this catastrophe, a former Yankee shortstop gave his own two cents.

In an interview with the New York Post, Derek Jeter gave his opinion on the Yankees’ 2023 season. The five-time World Series champion remarked, “It all boils down to consistency. It seems like they never really got on a roll. They played in a tough division. Baltimore surprised a lot of people. You go through a 162-game schedule when everyone’s gunning for you, which they always are when you play for the Yankees. There was not a level of consistency there that’s needed to get to the postseason.”
Jeter underlined the importance of consistency, especially in a long 162-game season where anything can happen. He said that the Yankees were never able to achieve it. He also noted how the unexpected rise of the Baltimore Orioles made their division even more challenging.
In essence, Jeter’s statements offered a veteran’s view of the turbulent 2023 season for the Yankees. Although the Yankees have had much worse in the past.

A new age of Yankee baseball was yet to begin, and while promising prospects like Bernie Williams were identified, the team’s overall performance fell short, leaving fans heartbroken.
