Derek Jeter and Barack Obama have met multiple times over the years. They have been spotted greeting each other in public, at baseball games in particular. These interactions seemed to have had a lasting impact on both of them and made them think alike.

So much so that when asked a question, both Jeter and Obama used the same words to answer. This happened when Jeter was at the White House in 2016 and had a conversation with Obama. In the Players’ Tribune, Derek Jeter said this about the conversation, “This isn’t an interview, and it’s not about politics. I simply wanted to share our perspectives on a few things that are meaningful to both of us.”

During this visit to the White House that Jeter and Obama ended up answering some questions. It was here that both Jeter and Obama answered one particular question about NBA star Michael Jordan using the exact same words.

What did Derek Jeter and Barack Obama say about the ’96 Bulls?

In 2016, during Jeter’s visit to the White House, both Jeter and Obama appeared in a video series called “First Thing That Pops” created by the Players’ Tribune, an organization founded by Jeter himself in 2014. When asked to name the best basketball team of all time, Both Jeter and Obama answered saying “96 Bulls.” The 1996 Chicago Bulls team is widely considered the greatest basketball team of all time.

The 96 Chicago Bulls won 72 regular season games during the 1995-96 season en route to winning an NBA Championship. They were the first NBA team to win 70 regular season games,  and held the record for most regular season wins for almost 20 years.

Although Obama is a diehard Bulls fan and Jeter is Michael Jordan’s close friend, you can’t fault them for their choices. The 96 Bulls team is indeed one of the best and the opinion is almost unanimous.

How did Jeter and Michael Jordan become close friends?

Derek Jeter has developed a close friendship with Michael Jordan over the years. In a 2014 interview with Lou Di Pietro, Jeter said “We first met when I was in Arizona Fall League, when he was playing baseball. MJ is like a brother to me; our relationship has grown throughout the years, and he’s like an older brother I never had. We’ve had a lot of conversations about life and about competing, both on and off the field or court.”

Jordan was even present at Jeter’s retirement celebration at Yankees Stadium in 2014. The friendship between Jeter and Jordan blossomed because of their shared love for competing.

But the friendship has only gotten closer after retirement. Derek Jeter is also one of the longest-serving ambassadors for the Jordan brand, having signed with them in 1999.
