Real life unfortunately doesn’t have a soundtrack. But if the Philadelphia Phillies had it their way, it would be ‘Dancing On My Own.’ Not the synth version by Swedish singer-songwriter Robyn, which earned a Grammy nomination. Instead, the City of Brotherly Love has been singing along to Calum Scott’s ballad version. In response to the immense love, the English singing sensation is making a bold declaration.

Philadelphia is rejoicing after making it to the postseason for the second year in a row after a long drought. Looking ahead to a thrilling match-up vs. Atlanta, fans are rooting for the Fighting Phils. Meanwhile, everyone can be heard singing along to the iconic song from 2015’s Britain’s Got Talent, of course. If they’re lucky, the city might even see the artist perform it in person.

In 2022, losing to the Houston Astros in the Fall Classic was a massive defeat. But the fact that the Phillies even made it to the World Series after 13 long years was cause enough for celebration. A repeat appearance of Red October has fans asking for that ultimate trophy after putting together a wonderful season. Among that horde is Calum Scott.

Second in the NL East, the Phillies clubhouse was blasting a dance mix of ‘Dancing On My Own’ the day they clinched the playoffs. The song is sure to be replayed at every other victory the team takes. With Citizens Bank Park screaming along to the lyrics in tune, Scott may be found in the crowd too.

“They win the World Series, I’m there, man,” the singer-songwriter said recently. “I think at that point, you’ll have to hold me back.” Even though the lyrics are worlds away from baseball fun, the bop has become the Phillies anthem in a strange pop culture moment. Interestingly, the franchise was looking to replace the melody earlier in 2023.

Despite Claims of ‘Second Place Song’, Dancing On My Own Is Back

It’s not just that the ballplayers sing along to the ditty in various videos shared on social media. There is also the fact that audience in the stands perfectly match the lyrics and the ‘oh-oh-ohs’ in rhythm. ‘Dancing On My Own’ was so popular by the end of 2022 that Calum Scott was thanking Spotify listeners.

But in an interesting twist, February 2023 saw the club wanting to switch songs, according to Sports Illustrated. “That one took us all the way to the World Series,” catcher J.T. Realmuto said. Even left fielder Kyle Schwarber wanted to dance to a new tune next. “It’s a second-place song. It’s done.”
