The New York Mets have been a disastrous let-down in 2023. World Series dreams have gone down the drain because players seem to be in a perpetual slump, despite their lucrative contracts. The Mets have traded superstar pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander within a week of each other in an already struggling lineup. So will the team be able to come back next year? Billionaire owner Steve Cohen certainly thinks so.
A roster check full of veterans has not done the trick so far and working on the farm system is the next obvious step. Scherzer and Verlander’s trades helped them receive younger talent in return, which Cohen is confident about. And although he has made bold claims for 2024, Scherzer claimed differently.

What makes a good team? Focusing on veteran players or investing in the pipeline? Most front offices have spent their seasons trying to figure out a balance between the two, including the Mets. While the club’s owner may be a billionaire, he is not exempt from facing situations where money doesn’t magically solve problems.
In a recent letter to fans with season tickets, Cohen apologized for his lackluster team. Besides admitting that this was not where he saw his squad heading, he also promised “to build a pipeline of high caliber talent in our farm system that will fuel our major league team for years to come.”

The Mets’ claims that they won’t spend money on free agency this season have received a lukewarm response at best. And yet, as per The New York Post, Cohen has guaranteed a “formidable” team next season.
Given their current state, it’s anyone’s guess how the front office is going to make it happen. Max Scherzer certainly didn’t believe it if his earlier claims are anything to go by.

Not to a World Series, that’s for sure. 2023 will not be the season they break a 36-year drought to win their third-ever championship. If Scherzer is to be believed, nor will it be 2024, despite Cohen’s claims.
In a discussion with Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the now-Rangers pitcher says, “I talked to Billy [Epler]. I was like, ‘OK, are we reloading for 2024?’ He goes, ‘No, we’re not. Basically our vision now is for 2025-2026, 25 at the earliest, more like 26. We’re going to be making trades around that.'”

The pitcher would have preferred to stay in New York if possible. But for someone who is long past his prime and has a single World Series title under his belt in 16 MLB years, a team focusing on the championship would be his first priority.

Scherzer has been criticized for throwing his previous teams under the bus before, but it’s undeniable that his words hold some grain of truth. Given these claims, who are the fans supposed to believe? Only time will tell.
