The New York Yankees are resurgent, aiming to fight their way back into the post-season on the back of some newly discovered form, but it’s not all good news. The injury bug has been rampant in the Yankees dugout taking out several key players over the course of the season. With it’s latest victim it not only claimed the most exciting Yankee prospect to don the Pinstripes, but it also seems that the star may not be able to make his way back into the fold for some time now.
Credit for the Yankees’ return to form has often been given to the introduction of the ‘Baby Bombers’. Referring to the Yankees’ young prospects who were called up to the Major Leagues at the beginning of September during the roster expansion, the stars have galvanized the hitting lineup and the Yankees haven’t slowed down since. However, one of those stars could be set for a delayed return to MLB after a horrifying injury.

Jason Dominguez, the Yankees’ top prospect made his debut memorable for every Yankees fan with his performance. The emergent star, dubbed the ‘Martian’ for his otherworldly hitting ability certainly had the Bronx excited about what could be. However, the dream was not to last too long. At least not for the 2024 season.
News soon started coming in about the star having been taken out of the lineup. Initially diagnosed with inflammation in his right elbow, scans soon confirmed that the youngster had sustained a UCL tear and would be undergoing a Tommy John surgery as soon as next week which would put the 2024 season in doubt for him.
A clarification from the Yankees re: Jasson Dominguez — it is possible that the surgeon could use internal bracing during the Tommy John procedure, but even if so, it will not change the 9-10 month estimate.

However, early recoveries cannot be ruled out. Just last season, the Phillies’ Bryce Harper had a Tommy John surgery as late as November and was back in the team fold by May playing games regularly.
The urgency of Dominguez however, does not compare to the Phillies’ franchise player, and being only 20 years old, the Yankees will want to exercise caution so as to ensure long-term success. The return timeline for the young star has been set at 9-10 months for the MLB meaning he would return sometime after the 2024 All-Star break.

While still unlikely, the season could still have an ending that Yankees fans will remember as a season but only time will tell if that will be for their dream run, or for the season that they almost ended with a losing record.
