June has brought with it some unrelenting heat, but there is fun to be had just yet. In celebrating the LGBTQI+ community, every major organization and corporation has immersed itself in a rainbow. Even baseball keeps up with the times, with MLB franchises holding their annual Pride Night. All but one that is. The Texas Rangers still refuse to dedicate a game to Pride, but they recently delivered an unforgettable celebration.

The Southern state is home to millions of Hispanic residents whose culture is deeply entrenched in Texas. The Rangers hold an annual event full of Mexican customs to honor this population. And the trend continued in 2023.

Every year, different MLB teams commemorate the Hispanic population in the US through some fun activities. And Globe Life Field did the same this year. The Texas Rangers announced that June 17th would be the special night, where fans could come and enjoy some authentic Mexican food. In addition, popular items from the culture would also populate the grounds. Moreover, the baseball fans could buy collectibles such as custom hats, jerseys, or even a full uniform.

A fan posted a clip from the outside of the stadium, spanning the entire exterior. They are standing at the end of what seems to be a long line of fans who are eagerly waiting to get inside. Quirky music plays on in the background and one can clearly see the name of the ballpark in big letters.

But it seems like the fan couldn’t help but rub salt in the wound for many as they captioned the tweet, MEXICAN HERITAGE DAY AT TEXAS RANGERS GAME DAY, AND SORRY THERE’S NO PRIDE NIGHT.”  Have Rangers decided never to hold another Pride celebration at all?

After a failed try, the Rangers have no plans to hold a Pride Night ever again

The Texas team remains the only major MLB franchise not to hold a Pride celebration. Despite protests, the team has firmly stated that they will not cause controversy again. Because in 2003, their effort to invite LGBTQI+ groups to their ballpark backfired when they received extreme criticism. They want to make everyone feel comfortable when they come to watch baseball.

However, the Rangers’ COO, Neil Leibman, said the team is still trying to be diverse. Their efforts may be subtle, but they plan to be more inclusive in their hiring practices and take the celebration further than a single night.
