What’s a little fun and teasing between frenemies? Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez have been attracting audiences for their FOX Sports postseason segment this season. A-Rod has been a full-time MLB host for the network since 2017, with former rival David Ortiz joining him. Now that the crew comprises the legendary New York Yankees captain, the retired Boston Red Sox slugger has not missed any opportunity to ridicule them.

When Jeter made his FOX debut in London, Ortiz jokingly gifted him a Red Sox jersey. The rivalry between the BoSox and the Bronx was at its highest peak when these three played. The star sluggers may be retired now but as Big Papi has proven, he’s not above a little mockery.

The current ALCS has stirred up fans as the Texas Rangers look to win their first World Series and the Houston Astros defend their 2022 crown. But with Ortiz, Jeter, and A-Rod present, it’s impossible not to talk about the 2004 ALCS at least once. Or twice, or multiple times, as Big Papi keeps doing.

It was a series for the ages – the New York Yankees were a dynasty, trying for another Fall Classic. The Boston Red Sox hadn’t won a World Series in 86 years and it seemed like they would miss that year too. But in a fantastic comeback, Beantown overcame a 3-0 deficit and not only won the ALCS but also the Commissioner’s Trophy that year. The Curse of the Bambino was broken.

All three ballplayers have unforgettable memories of that time, whether good or bad, but especially because the MVP title went to Big Papi. Yesterday, Derek Jeter was discussing the Astros’ two consecutive wins at Globe Life Field and how teams can be comfortable at ballparks on the road.

When the Yankees captain fumbled at how to explain it, Ortiz chimed in with, “Ask me!” The panel burst out laughing because David Ortiz had been instrumental in leading Boston to victory in 2004. And he did it at Yankee Stadium!

One would assume recollections of such a game would be painful because the almost victory turned into a terrible loss. Jeter wanted to point out the same of Texas a few days ago, who won the first two ALCS games. “Just because [the Astros] are down two games, it’s not over. We’ve lost a series being up 3-0.”

Of course, Ortiz had a hilarious response, “YOU DID?!”?which earned him laughter. But surprisingly, the former Yankees slugger’s prediction seems to be coming true. After a two-game deficit, Houston has won another two.
