It’s been a tough year in the Bronx. The New York Yankees have been unbelievably dealt blow after blow with injuries all season long. While fans have criticized the front office to no end, the players also bear responsibility. One of the biggest disappointments in pinstripes has, of course, been Giancarlo Stanton.

Traded from the Miami Marlins in high hopes, the slugger has failed to live up to his reputation. 2022 could have been excused if not for a worse performance in 2023. With aging veteran Josh Donaldson finally let go, Bronx fans want the Yankees to take the same route with Stanton. Whatever the future holds, a 5x World Series pitcher is offering some advice for improvement.

Having played for 5 different teams, David Cone has seen many a hitter in his time. Even after retirement, he knows Giancarlo Stanton is not in his best form. The Yankees slugger has been struggling for a long time but with the modern era’s focus on analytics, Cone believes Stanton can improve.

Biomechanics easily help identify how bodies move and what changes can be made to make them move a certain way. Cone believes that’s exactly what the pinstriped outfielder should do and re-evaluate his strengths and weaknesses.

In an interview with Toeing the Slab, the former pitcher also referred to how Stanton’s lower body puts him in a troubling position. In order to protect it from injury, the 33-year-old has been running slower than ever, a point that fans have not failed to mock him for.

“We really saw a diminished player last year. That culminated in him trying to score from first base on a double…he almost was jogging home trying to protect his legs, his lower half from injury. That’s a compromised player – he needs to figure that out physically. He needs to do a better job of training, of finding out what the problems are, not just from age but the fact that this keeps happening year in and year out. The chronic condition of his lower half needs to be addressed.”

Having been on the mound for over two decades, Cone also had a unique pitcher’s perspective.

Batting in MLB is usually all about power hitting, but Stanton is lacking. “A lot of times late in the year we’d see him take a fastball right down the middle automatically on the first pitch. Giancarlo Stanton needs to be a guy that if you throw a first-pitch fastball to, he’s gonna murder it,” Cone says in the same interview.

Having not just been an MLB player but also a color commentator for the New York Yankees, the retired left-hander’s advice is not one to be ignored. Big G will be entering his age-34 season in 2024, a time when most are considered past their prime. But Cone still said, “I wanna see him take a vicious swing at those [fastballs] next year.”
