At least once a decade, sometimes more, Major League Baseball sees the rise of a legendary player who becomes worthy of Cooperstown. But once in a while, those ballplayers make a mistake that becomes unforgivable. And just like that, their chances at a Hall of Fame induction go down the drain. Whatever their career stats or accomplishments. This distinction is not easy to achieve under normal circumstances. But when one bad choice ruins someone’s chances, fans feel especially heartbroken.

The committee has snubbed many good baseballers over the years, two of the most popular being Barry Bonds and Curt Schilling. Both are controversial in their own right. Fans give Bonds the cold shoulder for his PED usage, despite his immense talent. Schilling is an outspoken personality on Twitter who often gets into arguments with fans. In fact, he recently gave his opinion on how Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout may be better than Bonds.

Steroid usage can often be tricky to navigate, especially when analyzing a player’s performance due to enhancement. Bonds never tested positive for any banned substance but rumors affected his reputation. Schilling believes Bonds used and even called him a ‘cheater’. In a long Twitter thread of discussion with various fans, the former Boston Red Sox player mentioned Bonds and Mike Trout.

Trout is arguably one of the best MLB players of this generation and fans think he’s well on his way to a Hall of Fame-worthy career. But Schilling doesn’t think so. For him, the only way Trout is better than Bonds is when one looks at the retired player’s performance before steroid use.

In reply to a fan saying Bonds was one of the best hitters, the ex-pitcher replied, “Hitting? Agreed for the most part. He was a HOF talent before cheating and then went to his own league on steroids. His pre cheat numbers is who he was imo, and that player trout is better than.”

The Trout vs Bonds debate is still ongoing among MLB fans

For sports fans, it’s natural to compare players of the present with those who have come before. Trout and Bonds are two of those, and where general opinion is concerned, fans stand divided. Of course, none of them take the PED accusations lightly, and some factor that in when mentioning his stats. Some have even made cross-sport comparisons, calling this debate the Michael Jordan vs LeBron James argument of baseball!
