In a somewhat sluggish MLB Hot Stove, recent news might indicate that the Cubs are set to send the market searing again. Despite previous speculations, the Chicago Cubs are reportedly not backing out of the Cody Bellinger free agency contention any time soon, as has been reported by an MLB insider.

Bellinger has been the center of many a rumor this offseason after spending a spectacular year in the Cubs’ dugout. While most rumors stemmed from the volatility of his asking price, many were focused on the uncertainty of his future as well. With Chicago on the outs, Bellinger would’ve been left with just the Blue Jays in the run for him. If recent news is proof, the team’s interest in Cody Love might even see a decline, although nothing as such has been confirmed currently.

According to insider and USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale’s Twitter (now X) post, the Cubs have not abandoned their desire to clinch Cody Bellinger. Nightengale’s post indicates that both teams are in search of a centerfielder. However, the Cubs have a greater desire and need to clinch one soon. Especially considering the fact that the Jays already acquired a CF of their own on a short-term deal just a few hours ago.

Centerfirleder Kevin Kiermaier just came back to base a few hours ago on a one-year deal worth $10.5 million, reports Nightengale. The contract that is all set to be confirmed today lessens the Blue Jays’ need to clinch another offensive player for the team.

That leaves the Cubs in somewhat of a leading position in the Cody Bellinger sweepstakes right now. But Cody Love’s asking price remains a threat to his future.

Finances might be a roadblock for Bellinger’s future

Cody Bellinger has been vying for a deal of around $170 million to $300 million for 8 to 10 years, per a Cubs Insider report. The last time the team splurged big on securing terms for a player, it was on outfielder Jason Heyward.

Notably, Heyward was 27 years of age as opposed to Bellinger’s 31, when the Cubs agreed to $184 million/ 8 years in 2016. Now, Cody Love’s rocky yet dazzling form on the field and an injurious past make the $300 million markup look a bit farfetched.
