Alex Bregman is not looking to sign with either the Detroit Tigers or the Toronto Blue Jays, but does this make him a sure-shot bet for the Chicago Cubs? Well, maybe not, as the Chicago Cubs’ radio host, Matt Spiegel, has made a surprising revelation regarding the ongoing disagreements in their front office. Ever since the Houston Astros’ All-Star, Alex Bregman, became a free agent, he has been unable to find any team that suits his preference over a contract. Meanwhile, Bregman rejected a six-year, $156 million offer from the Astros, as he is looking for something around $200 million or above.
Even though the Tigers and Blue Jays appeared to be the frontrunners, the Chicago Cubs were also vying for the position until the front office conflicts surfaced. While the Houston Astros find themselves in trouble, failing to make some strides in retaining Alex Bregman, the Cubs are making all the right moves to get Bregman on board. Bregman’s impressive record of.260 average, 26 home runs, and 75 RBIS in 2024 further raised speculations about the Cubs considering him a perfect fit in their lineup.
However, on February 4, MLB insider and Cubs’ radio host Matt Spiegel said, “There are fractions between both the Red Sox and the Cubs, where there’s split opinions about whether to make this happen or not.” According to Matt, teams are hesitant to sign Bregman because of his advanced age of 31, which makes it unclear how well he will perform in the upcoming years. But that’s not all; Spiegel even mentioned that, from a business perspective, the Boston Red Sox would unlikely offer Bregman something massive.

The Red Sox earlier offered a three-year contract to Teoscar Hernandez, which could have been increased to four years, but they didn’t, ultimately letting him go to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Given his advancing age, the Cubs also appear uninterested in signing him to a long-term contract, which further demonstrates the opposing viewpoints of both teams. However, if the Cubs get Bregman, he could be paired alongside his good friends, Ryan Pressly and Kyle Tucker, which could increase the production at the top half of the order. Meanwhile, the Astros are also looking to retain their 2x All-Star.
The Astros can be looking for a reunion with Alex Bregman
The Houston Astros’ trading Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs has opened up possibilities of a reunion with their All-Star legend, Alex Bregman. While they are facing stiff competition from other teams that are also looking for him, the Astros can predict what will happen with Bregman’s departure. Not only would it create a major gap in their roster, but it would also lower their chances of securing the World Series title in the upcoming years.

Now, amidst the free agency saga, the Astros should look to reassess their previous $156 million offer that was rejected by Alex Bregman earlier. It is important to note that if they keep Bregman, they may have to let go of their true ace, Framber Valdez, who went 15-7 with a 2.91 ERA in his 28 starts. The Houston Astros would also have to make some changes in the positions of players, like sending Jose Altuve to the left field.
