During this free agency, few deals have seemed as obvious as a potential Cody Bellinger reunion with the Chicago Cubs. It just makes sense, with the star outfielder setting the tone during a fantastic 2023 season. But now, as talks drag on, the Cubs’ youth development might end the chances of a reunion taking place.

Since the beginning of the off-season, Bellinger and the Cubs have been linked to each other. The 2023 NL Comeback Player of the Year has even said he’s open to returning. But now, a deal may be in jeopardy.

It has been well-documented that the Chicago Cubs are looking to develop prospects during the 2024 season. This includes significant game time for players, such as Michael Busch and Pete Crow-Armstrong. Most recently, The Athletic detailed the Cubs’ plans surrounding their prospects with Busch and Crow-Armstrong playing important factors in the Cody Bellinger sweepstakes.

According to The Athletic, “The consensus among the team’s brass is that Busch will get an opportunity — very likely at first base — to take a starting job in the spring and run with it.” There was also further context on Crow-Armstrong as well, with some expecting him to be a defensive asset in the outfield who can further develop his swing. Cody Bellinger plays first base and outfield, so these two youngsters will require games at his top positions.

Although a deal between Bellinger and the Cubs is very much in discussion, these prospects may impact it. If the Cubs believe these youngsters can produce, it may dissuade them from going ahead and signing the 28-year-old star. But final updates on a deal are still far out.
