Recently, an MLB game was played between San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants in Mexico City. It saw a record 11 home runs just two short of the all-time MLB record of 13. Analyzing the game, Joe Pompliano shared that the altitude of the City is responsible for the change in the elevation of the ball. Pompliano wrote, ” And 11 of 17 fly balls (64.7%) went for a home run, compared to the MLB average of 12.2%.”
MLB is in Mexico City this weekend, and balls are flying out of the park.
There were 11 Home Runs hit yesterday — two short of the MLB record of 13.
And 11 of 17 fly balls (64.7%) went for a home run, compared to the MLB average of 12.2%

While comparing the elevation of Mexico City’s (7,315 ft) and Denver’s (5,238 ft), he stated an example and wrote, “A standard long fly ball with a 103 mph exit speed and a 27.5-degree launch angle would travel 398 feet at sea level. At Coors, it would fly 427 feet. And in Mexico City, it would cover 438 feet.”
Isn’t it amazing how the elevation of 2,000 feet helps in the stark increase of the home run conversion?

The encounter between Padres and Giants is not the first between MLB teams in Mexico City. MLB teams have played four times in Mexico City, the last being the game between Astros and Angels on May 4-5 in 2019. It was a two-game series between the two MLB giants.
Guess what? Both affairs were high-scoring encounters. The total runs scored were more than ten in each game. Even though the Houston Astros swept the series, both team fans loved the atmosphere. The stadium played its role in this, as we saw six home runs in the second game.
Moreover, MLB is looking to increase its reach with such regular games. We might see more MLB teams coming and playing in Mexico City in the upcoming years. The high scoring will act as a catalyst for the promotion and engage more people with the game.
