Good things come to those who wait – this could be written somewhere in Scott Boras’ room. One of the most popular tactics of the super agent has been to make his clients wait before signing a contract. Sometimes even stretching the talks till spring training. This year, he has followed the same strategy for clients Cody Bellinger, Blake Snell, and Jordan Montgomery. Unsurprisingly, it seems to be working.

With Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani officially off to Dodger Stadium, suddenly the market is depleted of free agents. With thin pickings, Boras’ clients are the biggest free agents still available. It seems we’re close to witnessing the master playing his cards.

Both of these players are coming off award-winning seasons in recent years – Silver Slugger for Cody Bellinger and Cy Young Award for Snell. But there has been eerie silence around both. With teams choosing to focus more on Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani, things are improving for the Scott Boras clients.

The Athletic reported, “Boras represents the top four remaining free agents in The Athletic’s Top 40 Big Board — center fielder Cody Bellinger, left-handers Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery and third baseman Matt Chapman. “ With Yamamoto officially off the market after a $325 million deal, Snell and Jordan Montgomery are now the biggest pitching free agents remaining. Something that Boras certainly loves to know.

Now suddenly Scott Boras holds all the cards. The super agent’s decision to wait may start to pay dividends for his clients. With teams desperate for quality pitchers, Boras has a much wider field to play in. Especially as he also has two of the biggest trade targets – Corbin Burnes and Dylan Cease.

Even though the pitchers will directly benefit, sluggers like Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman too might see their value increase. Especially as the market is extremely thin for positional players. There are multiple teams to look out for in this instance.

The franchises that could be in the crosshairs of Scott Boras

Korean star Lee Jung-Hoo has already seen Scott Boras magic by getting a $113 million deal with the San Francisco Giants. Boras can target the Giants even more, especially as the team is still looking for that one star who could be the face of their organization. But they are not alone.

There’s the Boston Red Sox who are just as desperate after a terrible 2023. The team is woefully low on pitchers and Boras has an abundance of them. At the same time, teams like the Chicago Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays’ offseason has been disappointing till now. With both of them linked to Cody Bellinger, things could get interesting if Boras manages to get another team in those sweepstakes.
