Just when life was returning to the free agency of Cody Bellinger, someone again pulled the rug from under him. The talented slugger’s free agency has been a fascinating journey till now. While most fans expected that things would be a bit cool because of Bellinger’s record, no one expected it to turn into an ice age. Now it’s up to Scott Boras to find heat in the snow.
But the question is – is Boras to be blamed here? After all, one of the biggest complaints regarding Bellinger’s deal has been its high price. Saying he’d be “stunned” if the Yankees signed Bellinger, Kay was clear that if the Yankees do spend more money “it’s going to be to bolster the bullpen”. The reasons that Kay gave for Bellinger’s apparent mismatch with the Bombers were quite simple – they do not have the outfield space to play Bellinger.
This could come as a setback for Scott Boras and Cody Bellinger. Having a team like the Yankees enter the race at this point would have boosted the free agency of Bellinger. A boost is just what they need, especially, as the Cubs are not being urgent enough for Cody Love. While one reason for that is the apparent lack of competition, the biggest is the high expectations of Boras.
