The New York Yankees have a lot to fix this off-season. Yes, they made it to the World Series but their roster still needs an upgrade. The priority is definitely re-signing star outfielder Juan Soto, but their issues at first base also require to be addressed. Hence, we have come across reports linking them heavily with free agent Pete Alonso. But it seems the Bronx Bombers are keeping their options open and are in pursuit of the three-time reigning Gold Glove winner, Christian Walker.
The Yankees are also dealing with the challenge of replacing or re-signing both second baseman Gleyber Torres and first baseman Anthony Rizzo. While Alonso’s success in New York with the Mets makes him a good fit for the Yankees and is obviously a bigger name, Walker may be the more viable option.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, “There are at least six teams who plan to aggressively pursue Walker with everyone involved from the New York Yankees to the Diamondbacks to the Washington Nationals.” The report further states that teams believe “he’ll come at less than half the price of Alonso.”

According to forecasts from MLB Trade Rumors, Alonso’s contract is expected to be around $125 million over five years ($25 million) while Walker is expected to sign a three-year deal for $60 million ($20 million per year).
The Yankees have a reputation for pursuing star players and making moves in the market. Rizzo performed well after his return from injury in October, but seven of his eight postseason hits were singles. His lone extra-base hit was a double. He hit just eight home runs in 92 regular season games, none in his final 95 regular season plate appearances. This could be a reason why the Yankees rejected his $17 million club option a few weeks ago. Hence, they need to fill the gap at first base.
Alonso’s impressive display of home runs and captivating personality would have seemed like a fit for the team’s iconic pinstripes. However, the decision-makers within the Yankees organization seem to value certain qualities in Walker that surpass Alonso’s moonshot performances.
In the last two seasons, Walker has proven to be a better player when comparing the performances according to FanGraphs data analysis reports. During this period Walker’s statistics show a .254 batting average with a .334, on-base percentage, and .484 slugging percentage, along with 59 home runs, 119 weighted runs created, and a 6.9 WAR. On the other hand, Alonso’s numbers reflect a .229 batting average, a .324 on-base percentage, and a .480 slugging percentage with 80 home runs, a 121 wRC+, and a WAR of 4.9 over the time frame.
Alonso remains the popular choice and is capable of hitting 40+ home runs regularly, but Walker offers the Yankees much more. While he can hit for a slightly higher average, his much more important quality is that he’s a better defender, having won each of the last three Gold Gloves at first base. Yankees are looking to improve their defense and Walker fits the bill. There is another reason why it would make sense for the Pinstripes to sign him over Alonso.
Walker is 33 years old and is likely to snag a three-year deal, but on the other hand, the 29-year-old Alonso could seek a deal for double the length. Moreover, the financial implications of picking Walker over Alonso will allow the Yankees to be better placed for a deal to re-sign Soto.

Apart from finances, maintaining a defensive setup with Aaron Judge patrolling the center field and Soto stationed in the right field may not be sustainable for an extended period. Given Judge’s advancing age into his mid-30s, it would be prudent not to keep him in center or outfield for long. If Soto returns in the future, there will be a need for a conversation with either Soto or Judge regarding transitioning them over towards playing at base during some games.
Alonso to stay with Queens in 2025?
The Mets are facing a crossroads this offseason as they deal with two situations concerning the first base position. One involving their beloved slugger and franchise star Pete Alonso. The other considered the reliable and underrated Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker as a potential replacement in case Alonso’s time in Queens is up. The Mets find Walker a mix of power and defensive stability. He’s also under team control through 2025, which ensures cost stability, especially with Alonso’s upcoming free agency. Walker’s rounded abilities fit well with Stearns’ focus on versatility and smart roster building.

Interestingly other big companies like the Dodgers, Phillies, and Braves have already sorted their lineups. By having players like Freeman, Bryce Schwarber, and Olson on their side. And may not see Alonso as a priority. However, the Met’s consideration of Walker doesn’t necessarily indicate a willingness to part ways with Alonso yet. It’s more of a measure to cover their bases while discussions with Alonso are ongoing. However, if a team such as the Yankees or Cubs presents a trade proposal, Stearns might opt to agree to an Alonso deal and shift focus towards bringing Walker on board.
David Stearns’s decisions in restructuring the Mets will reveal the team’s approach. Attachment or practical planning. Either way, the stakes are high, and the decision will reverberate well beyond this offseason. As they move forward, the Mets will show where their focus lies. What’s your take on this?
