In a plot twist fit for the Bronx Bombers, Christian Walker has now taken the spotlight in the Yankees’ search for a baseman role, potentially overshadowing Pete Alonso. The Yankees have been vocal about their offseason goals being anticipated to pursue the Mets’ power hitter. However, recent rumors indicate a change in direction, towards Walker, who has now become their focus.
The Yankees have a reputation for pursuing star players and making moves in the market. Thus, the recent change in direction is both interesting and unexpected for their followers. Alonso’s impressive display of home runs and captivating personality would have seemed like a fit for the team’s iconic pinstripes. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, “there are at least six teams who plan to aggressively pursue” Walker, with everyone involved from the New York Yankees to the Diamondbacks to the Washington Nationals. Teams are anticipating that Walker may come at a cost half the price tag of Alonso this offseason, according to forecasts from MLB Trade Rumors. They project Alonso’s contract to be around $125 million over five years ($25 million). Walker is expected to sign a three-year deal for $60 million ($20 million per year).
In the last two seasons, Walker has proven to be a better player when comparing the performances according to FanGraphs data analysis reports. During this period Walker’s statistics show a .254 batting average with a .334, on-base percentage, and .484 slugging percentage, along with 59 home runs, 119 weighted runs created, and a 6.9 WAR. On the other hand, Alonso’s numbers reflect a .229 batting average, a .324 on-base percentage, and a .480 slugging percentage with 80 home runs, a 121 wRC+, and a WAR of 4.9 over the time frame.ADVERTISEMENT

Considering the implications and strategic fit for the Yankees, Walker over Alonso makes sense, particularly if Soto remains on the team. Apart from finances, maintaining a defensive setup with Aaron Judge patrolling the center field and Soto stationed in the right field may not be sustainable for an extended period. Given Judge’s advancing age into his mid-30s, it would be prudent not to keep him in center or outfield for long. If Soto returns in the future, there will be a need for a conversation with either Soto or Judge regarding transitioning them over towards playing at base during some games.

Alonso to stay with Queens in 2025?
The Mets are facing a crossroads this offseason as they deal with two situations concerning the first base position. One involving their beloved slugger and franchise star Pete Alonso. The other considered the reliable and underrated Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker as a potential replacement in case Alonso’s time in Queens is up. The Mets find Walker a mix of power and defensive stability. He’s also under team control through 2025, which ensures cost stability, especially with Alonso’s upcoming free agency. Walker’s rounded abilities fit well with Stearns’ focus on versatility and smart roster building.

Interestingly other big companies like the Dodgers, Phillies, and Braves have already sorted their lineups. By having players like Freeman, Bryce Schwarber and Olson on their side. And may not see Alonso as a priority. However, the Met’s consideration of Walker doesn’t necessarily indicate a willingness to part ways with Alonso yet. It’s more of a measure to cover their bases while discussions with Alonso are ongoing. However, if a team such as the Yankees or Cubs presents a trade proposal, Stearns might opt to agree to an Alonso deal and shift focus towards bringing Walker on board.
David Stearns decisions in restructuring the Mets will reveal the team’s approach. Attachment or practical planning. Either way, the stakes are high, and the decision will reverberate well beyond this offseason. As they move forward, the Mets will show where their focus lies. What’s your take on this?
