This off-season has been nothing sort of magic for the baseball world, all thanks to deals that were beyond imagination. However, amidst all the open secrets, a mystery is yet to be unfolded, which involves the Chicago Cubs. Notably, the NL team has not signed any major player so far. Moreover, there seems to be no effort to re-sign Cody Bellinger. What can be the reason behind it?

Given that almost every team has retained its core players, the hesitation from the Cubs is suspicious. With many teams following the center fielder, any delay could add to worries for the 2016 champions. It can also jeopardize the upcoming season, which they won’t want to see after signing Craig Counsell on the biggest manager deal. However, if the latest report is believed, they have done it on purpose with an eye on the future.

It has been a weird off-season for the Chicago Cubs, who may lose a key entity that went through a career rebirth – Cody Bellinger. With the MLB world left wondering about their reasoning, a recent point of view from The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma brings forth a new thought.

According to The Athletic, the Cubs have not made any major signings for a reason. Notably, Jed Hoyer is looking a year ahead of the current time with a focus on the free agents in 2024.

“Along with Soto entering free agency, Alex Bregman and Pete Alonso could be on the open market as well. Veterans like Jose Altuve and Paul Goldschmidt may be available, and Ha-Seong Kim and Willy Adames will both be sub-30. The pitching looks potentially stacked with Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, Zach Wheeler, and Walker Buehler topping a strong class.”

If the names are analyzed, the move seems sensible, with many veterans joining the squad. However, for this, they have to forget about changes for the next season, which can impact them badly.
