Two of Boras’s four, Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, have created enough buzz in the free agency market with their probable deals. On one hand, they are searching for a befitting team on their own terms, while on the other, the impending regular season is dwindling their options. However, there are still a large number of teams pursuing these starting pitchers, and recently, a new team might have entered the list to chase Jordan Montgomery.
An odd circumstance may have built the ground for the Chicago Cubs to enter Monty’s pursuers list even amidst the spring training. Though the team has a heightened pitching segment, adding depth to the same can be a safe option for the team. But, will Monty fit their requirement?

The Chicago Cubs are somehow trembling upon the regular season with one of their starting pitchers on the frightening injured list. Jameson Taillon remains out of the question of spring training, given a series of injuries, including calf soreness and back stiffness. As far as his increasing injuries are concerned, it will be more than justified to sign another starting pitcher like Jordan Montgomery to bolster their pitching mound.
Earlier, while signing another client of super agent Scott Boras, the Cubs’ manager, Craig Counsell, indicated adding another star from the Boras’ clients’ list. Give that statement consideration, Montgomery just becomes the best-fitting candidate to support their top-tier pitchers, Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga, with his outstanding record of posting a 3-1 record over six playoff games with a 2.90 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 31 innings. Moreover, before entering the free agency market, he helped his previous team, the Rangers, to claim the biggest title, the World Series, in 2023.
Thus, adding him to the pitching segment can be ideally beneficial for any team’s need for a starting pitcher. Then again, there will be no harm in relying on the team’s current starting pitchers, given their excellent performance earlier. At the same time, Montgomery is way more costly with a demand of something around $170 million for a longer period. If not for the longer period, then short-term association also can harm the team in the season ahead of 2024 as both pitchers, Bellinger and Montgomery, will enter the free agency market with even higher demand, vacating the spot for starting pitchers in the same season. Given these circumstances, any conclusion, either favorable or not, can be assumed. But, does Jordan Montgomery want to join Chicago?

Who falls under Monty’s preference?
Despite creating enough buzz to get probable deals with giant pursuers, the left-hander Montgomery seems to have his preference in other directions. As MLB analyst Buster Olney remarked on ‘The Michael Kay Show’ on ESPN New York, the star pitcher is relaying “in a smaller market like Texas, like St. Louis,” highlighting his interest in the small market deal.
